I really dislike some of them too, caryne, but was amazed by the volume of new important releases, new artists and the importance of the year as a great psychedelic (music) year. I dare say, I could care less about Blue Oyster Cult & the Stooges, or even Genesis, but it is a significant year in music....as is generally noted. One man's trash....... But seriously, you must admit it was a great year for music....one of the greatest..... especially when juxtaposed against the times. (who do you dislike?)

If in the above you mean 'you COULDN'T care less' about the Stooges I am shocked. There are the greatest band on the list, bar one
As for the bands I really dislike, well there are some there I don't care much about but really dislike are Genesis, Chicago and Blue Oyster Cult.
Of course, I am (only here) at 45 quite a youngster, I didn't start buying records till the early 70's and I guess my 'era' was Punk, with The Clash being my favourite band of that time |

Don't be shocked, caryne...I wasn't saying that The Stooges aren't great!!(they've reissued something like their first 4 LPs recently), but with all the bands I was into at the time, for some reason they were off my radar......still are.
Dislike ALL later Chicago, but their first two LPs are pretty great...but then I was also into the whole Vietnam protest scene in the late sixties for awhile, until we were arrested en masse, like so many........Chicago was pretty cutting edge then and Chicago was a hippie psych/revolution trip for a short time. By the 70's they were pretty much a Top 40 band & off my A list for good. So yes, I generally hate Chicago, but specifically love their first two LPs!

If you're ever at a loss as to what classic album should you get/listen to next, go to this link or get the book: "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" (sorry, rocker, much work!)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1001_Albums_You_Must_Hear_Before_You_Die
Hate some, love some...all have their merits...or not.

Yes I have this one as well - only last week, I got The Stones' Sticky Fingers on the strength of it. I've also got two others in the same series - 1001 Books and 1001 Films....they are also excellent. |

re: Michael Nesmith & "Magnetic South" Allmusic LP review.....
"Mixing a country sound with a rocker's instincts and blending airy thoughts on the nature of life & love with iconography of life in the West that brought together the old and the new, Michael Nesmith reveled in contradictions on Magnetic South, making them sound as comfortable as well-worn cowboy boots and as a Saturday night barn dance. It's a minor masterpiece of country-rock, and while the Eagles may have sold more records, Nesmith yodels a hell of a lot better than any of them."
All three of his LPs with The First National Band are equally great by one of country-rock's pioneers........and a must for country-rock lovers.

It's on Tantamount To Treason, rocker. Wow, not many know that one. Bad reviews & poor sales, but it has weathered time well, & is considered a great one now, & VERY rare! ( I just found a sealed copy!) ("Bonaparte's Retreat" is the song, by the way.)

Has anyone gotten the 2008 Sundazed MONO 13th Floor Elevators (1st LP)?? Every review has given it five stars out of five, and is supposed to kick every other release right out of the park......making the stereo version obsolete!!!
I better check it out.
You can compare the stereo with mono at: http://therisingstorm.net/rock/psych/page/2/ (scroll down)
Have any of you in the UK or elsewhere heard of these 60's psych/prog. bands ....from the UK. ...... Blossom Toes & East of Eden "Mercator Projected?? Just read they were quite good.

Going through some of my 'contemporary " blues LPs. Bonnie Raitt jumps out, as I said in my favorite female artist post just now. John Renbourn's (Pentangle) solo effort, "Faro Annie" LP, is great! So many others.....
WHO ARE YOUR FAVS??

On the subject of 1967, lest we get carried away someone has to be contrary and mention such gems as: - The Ultimate Spinach - The Peanut Butter Conspiracy - The Beacon Street Union - Vanilla Fudge Those are albums that I actually purchased! Some would claim that certain herbal substances don't impair brain functioning. I respectfully submit these four items of evidence to the contrary. (I did also buy Sgt. Pepper, Younger than Yesterday, Da Capo, Buffalo Springfield, Surrealistic Pillow, and a lot of other fine albums. I wasn't completely out of it!)

HEY, ed, you're back. But wait, I actually thought Vanilla Fudge did some pretty nice stuff, albeit, greatly enhanced by cannabis ....or WAS it just the cannabis...oh well, they were a unique cover band. Have you heard, their release "Out Through The In Door" will be issued in the US later this year! Really! Once a cover band.........
