They're there..just got to hunt I guess. Maybe somebody can tell me how I can keep up, eh??????? I don't listen to the ray-dee-o like I used to when I was in my teens! Like Will Rogers, all I know now is what I read in the papers. Maybe I should get a sub to Mojo, eh? |

I was just reading an article that reminded what an amazing time it was to be alive then, a teen, and listening to the music of 1967.
Here's some of the greatness of that year: -Forever Changes -Velvet Underground & Nico debut -Sgt. Pepper's & Magical Mystery Tour -Small Faces "Itchycoo Park" -Moby Grape debut -Absolutely Free -The Doors & Strange Days -Surrealistic Pillow, After Bathing At Baxter's -Piper At The Gates Of Dawn -Disraeli Gears -Wild Honey & Smiley Smile -Alice's Restaurant -Safe As Milk -Goodbye & Hello -Ten Years After debut -Easter Everywhere -Song Cycle -David Bowie debut -Procol Harum debut -Younger Than Yesterday -Mellow Yellow -Buffalo Springfield debut (For What It's Worth inclusion LP) & Buffalo Springfield Again -Grateful Dead debut -Satanic Majesty's Request -The Who Sell Out -Jimi Hendrix Experience & Axis: Bold As Love -Animals "Winds Of Change" -Bee Gees 1st -Otis Redding records "Sittin' On A Dock In The Bay" (Otis Redding dies in crash 20 days later)(don't bust me again, caryne..18 days later!) -Sly & The Family Stone form -Blue Oyster Cult form -Captain Beefheart career starts -The Stooges career starts -Creedence Clearwater career starts -Chicago & The first Edition career starts -Genesis formed -"Days Of Future Passed" debut
John Coltrane, Otis Redding, Brian Epstein & Woody Guthrie .......RIP
An important year in music, to be sure. What a time!

Yes, there's still plenty of good music being written today it's just that it's not promoted in the way it used to be (sadly). I've found some wonderful stuff just through 'MySpace' including 'unsigned' artists from all over the world I would never have heard before. |

Was Brian Epstein dying 'great' then??????
Obviously, tragically monumental (The Beatles wouldn't last much longer) he was a big part of their success & the glue of The Beatles......RIP. this should have gone in my annotation of greats passing....
I gotta be on my toes with you, caryne! The thought actually occurred to me but I wasn't QUICK enough. Fixed it........thanks, actually, caryne!

As I really dislike some of the artists mentioned in your list I could have made a comment about that being 'great' as well but thought I'd just leave it at Brian's death not being great |

..thanks for the ideas..I have to realize that the Net now is probably the way to go to get new music...it's a way different world than what it was before....Speaking of Epstein, I know he actually went to the Liverpool record stores to see how the records were selling...kind of quaint now to think that was a way of marketing bands and music.... things change! |

I will state here though that I only find new music on the 'net' when it comes to buying it I still get CD or vinyl (when possible). I am very much of the belief that downloading is killing the record idustry with lots of young people these days thinking music as about as important as buying a packet of crisps! Personally I think things would be much better if people did still have to go to record stores to check how things are selling. |

I really dislike some of them too, caryne, but was amazed by the volume of new important releases, new artists and the importance of the year as a great psychedelic (music) year. I dare say, I could care less about Blue Oyster Cult & the Stooges, or even Genesis, but it is a significant year in music....as is generally noted. One man's trash....... But seriously, you must admit it was a great year for music....one of the greatest..... especially when juxtaposed against the times. (who do you dislike?)

I agree totally about buying the real object....I hate digital downloads....you know how much I like vinyl. The music downloads just don't seem "real" to me. I buy CDs or vinyl & import them so I can make a personal copy in case my original fails. But just as I like to hold a book in my hands, I love to hold that vinyl.....a thing of beauty. You sound like a rocker...what era did you grow up in, caryne. (Being an illustrator, I can identify with the death of the arts due to the digital era, piracy, etc.)

I would add those things that made 1967 great musically, two other events:
1. The Monterey Pop Festival .... which Grace Slick still maintains was by far the best
2. The first world wide simultaneous broadcast link-up entitled Our World on the 25 June. Who can forget the UK's contribution to that - The Beatles performing All You Need Is Love for the very first time
Touching on the term 'great' for a moment, it can also used in the context of scale or importance. Lennon's 1970 Rolling Stone interview with Jan Wenner shows that he was still not over Brian Epstein's death even then. And who can say what direction the Beatles' music might have taken had Brian not died?
More personally, Brian Epstein was a customer of my dad (who worked for the GEC) in around 1961 - but that of course was before he (Brian) took a lunchtime stoll across Lord St to find the Cavern.... and to see what all the fuss had been about.

I saw that broadcast, too. Monumental...Anything else ?(I'm sure) that I left out? Anyone? 1967 events that were particularly important to you? Paul announces Beatles drop acid?! Great (admission) to some, I guess. "Strawberry Fields Forever" release was pretty earth shaking too!! I've always wondered too about the what if's of Brian living......but there are so many what if's! Monterey Pop Fest WAS extremely great. That's very cool about Brian visiting your Dad's shop, J9!
"Summer Of Love"....summer of '67 San Francisco..pretty great, yah!

i was a 16 yr young kid in 1967, swept away with the whole thing! i just cannot find the words. it was MAGIC. it was a FEELING, best expressed by the music makers of that era. yeah, it was the love-ins i attended(Country joe, Burrito Bros., Canned Heat, etc), and my tripster friends, us painting her VW BUG with flowers and colors, some on the car, some in our minds, and here we go: the music! the MUSIC in 1967 was PLAYED ON THE RADIO! on mainstream top 40 pop radio...and it was (as Tony Tiger said), GREAT!!! we had no boundaries! Beatles, Buffalo Sprigfield, the Supremes,JAMES BROWN, Dusty Springfield,LULU, the T.J. BRASS,Ray Charles, janis ian, Otis Redding, blood, sweat and tears, Buck Owens,Aretha,Moby Grape, Johnny Mathis,Nancy Sinatra , and that guy who was her father, in other words,honky-tonk country, psych, chicago blues, jazz, and all of this in just one hour on the same radio station! 1967! Los Angeles. KRLA, KHJ, KFWB, I LIKED to listen to Wolfman Jack on KGFJ for the hard black stuff. anyway, i was thrilled with Bossradio, and the local bands, like the Byrds, Seeds, Love, Doors, ...they were promoted and mixed in the radio to open us up to new sounds. and we loved it! we just thought it was all GROOVY! we liked POP MUSIC! and that covered a wide range and like i said, it was MAGIC, how did this happen!? oNly GOD KNOWS!
...what the world needs now... |
