Ya, Gene met McGuinn at the Troubadour Club in LA after leaving The New Cristy's (inspired to leave for LA by the Beatles' success; & McGuinn left the folk scene due to the same inspiration). Clark & McGuinn were playing together at the Folk Den when Crosby, hearing them, persuaded them to let him join in. Then the group idea started with Clarke & Hillman joining soon after. (Jetset & Beefeaters were earlier band names, very short lived!) So ya, just like Crosby. CSN are working on reducing a 60 song set to 20 for their first new studio release since 1994. I've heard some tracks and they are VERY good, like the old days of classic analog CSN...a return to the earlier greatness, I think. Can't wait!
I've often thought about the "what if" scenario of: what if Crosby had not gotten fired by the Byrds (no CSN?) & what if Stephen Stills HAD been hired for the part he applied for as a Monkee?!! (NO Buffalo Springfield & NO CSN?!!...& maybe no Poco, no Loggins & Messina, the list goes on & on.....it all just fell into place) Dont'cha love fate & karma!!

Just thought we should do an appreciation of folk blues pioneer ROBERT JOHNSON. What blues/blues-rock/R & B artist hasn't credited Johnson for their inspiration & creative muse! Mayall, Clapton, Plant & Page, et al.......all hail the King of the Delta Blues. Got Volume 1 coming by post, on vinyl. The Father of them all........

Johnson..He's a legend dying at 27. I read he's about the only pre-WWII musician still having an effect on subsequent musicians especially with his blues records that he made. Keith Richards apparently when he first heard him thought he was playing TWO guitars. They said he was a poet too: "I'm a cutthroat seller The magician of Deal Who can stoke sweet fire That'll make you feel Like a hothouse flower On double defrost Who won't give a nickel For the petals it lost"....
R Johnson

re: The rock starved younger generation!
I mentioned to a younger manager of a food-chain store that the total of $19.67 (1967) was a good year. (I do that with my $$ totals for some reason!) He said "why?" & I replied, "that it was the year that Sgt. Pepper's was released." He replied..... "oh....I 've heard of it, but never HEARD it!!" Talk about musically deprived!! Rock & Roll 101 should be required in every school in the world! The history of the 60's isn't complete without the music... it defined the times. How many period documentary films use the music of the times as a backdrop? Almost all, I think.
I'm taking a copy back to that poor musically starved "kid". Geeze, gotta get the gospel according to rock out there..... doing my best!! Glad to have you younger "folks" on this site, jim, kula and so on !!!!!!

Right now I'm listening to JERRY RIOPELLE............
He's unknown to most outside Arizona where he still sells 50,000 CDs with each new release. Remarkable in a state of only 3 million. I was turned on to him when going to college there in the 70's. He's still hot today there. A cult figure elsewhere, his history is amazing. Phil Spector's first "producer" for Phil's newly formed label in 1965, his musical journey since is full of great tunes. If you're interested in something new in your music world, check out the link to an interview/bio & the youtube video of "Blues On The Table"...one of my favorites. Please do.......I like a lot of music, but this is one of my favorites. Rocker, bobf, john9 and all you messageboard guys..check this one out!

If you are interested still!......here are some free mp3's from Jerry's site. "Candy Bar" is so good. http://www.jerryriopelle.com/jrmusic.htm

Perhaps those shop assistants just want to make sure which 'Byrds' you are after.....there were these after all

You maybe know that obscure UK band (being on your side of the pond), caryne, but I tend to think it's just musically anemic US kids....I don't know the state of music in the UK, but if the industry had it's way we'd be buying nothing but American Idol winners & runner ups (a bit if an exaggeration, but you know what I mean)!! Save us! But more and more the kids are getting turned on to the good music....one can only take being force-fed that kind of slop for so long. (That is interesting about Ronnie Wood being in the original lineup of The Birds (UK). Thanks for the heads up.)

It was meant to be a joke (hence the wink symbol). I didn't really think young people in an US music shop would know The Birds
Still, there weren't a bad band actually, pity they got sidelined. |

Missed the wink! Sometimes that British dry humor is lost over the waves....on me anyway.

It's OK, LK, I reckon The Birds are a band that most people know little about which is a pity as they were pretty good |
