I've always been curious about that "Head" movie the Monkees did with Nicholson in '68 with "The Porpoise Song" in it. Also, the selection of a Tim Buckley tune reminded me of the episode of the Monks' t.v. show when Buckley made an appearance at the end. His "Starsailor" is often selected as one of the best albums ever. Anyone familiar with either that Monkees' film or "Starsailor"? And five more song picks: 1)I Am the Walrus 2)Eight Miles High 3)Dazed and Confused 4)Lear Jet Song(The Byrds' "5th Dimension album) 5)Andmoreagain |

I have HEAD and just watched it recently...a brilliant anti-movie/anti-war/anti-Monkees extravaganza! Starsailor is quite good also, though I love Blue Afternoon & Happy/Sad the most....
Here are the two songs in question...enjoy capt' and all!
Porpoise Song (by Carol King and hubby) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B702fD2tfgc
Song To The Siren (Monkees Show)--my favorite version over the Starsailor track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMTEtDBHGY4

I firmly hold theory that the very moniker of "Beach Boys" clouds much artistic judgement RE:Brian Wilson's post surfer-craze suites. Here's a whole lot of well articulated introspective depth that stands among many great works that despite enormous critical appeal is often overlooked by more casual classic pop fans mostly due to the fact it is widely conceived that the Beatles' alone spurred the crux of the revolutionary sixties and attempts by most others were pretentious pleas for mention in the annals of socially revelant artisan statement. In fact it was indeed "Pet Sounds" that gave direction to the sessions that culminated in the production of "Sgt. Pepper's" as well as "Sounds" is reputedly Paul McCartney's favorite album. Forogt to bring my earbuds here to library, but next time I'm really looking forward to that Monkees track. I do rememeber the Buckley tune from their t.v. show and think it a sin even exposure on a national network prime time program didn't break Buckley very much commercially. On the other hand, could it be he was part of the impetus of the singer-songwriter-accoustic movement popularized just a few years later by the likes of James Taylor,Gordon Lightfoot, and Jim Croce? If ever proven, this would make a strong case for hall of fame induction.
1)Nights in White Satin 2)In the Court of the Crimson King 3)Venus in Furs 4)Dear Mr. Fantasy 5)And a guilty pleasure Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter-Herman's Hermits |

Love the Monkees' "Porpoise" post. Makes me wonder if Mr. Dolenz, one of the first private owners of a Moog, was a student of early Pink Floyd as it evokes the same far out environs as "Piper at The Gates of Dawn" and urges the sense that the Monks' more serious works suffered the same undeserved fate as the many painstakingly ambitious offerings of Brian Wilson in that both bands were unfortuitously pigeonholed into many listeners only wanting "Hard Day's Night" parody videos from the pre-Fabs and future orange soda commercial jingles from the Boys. I dig this kind of aural fare that invokes near narcotic sensation even if all I've ingested all evening is Nutter Butters and Kool Aid. Check out 1967-72 Moody Blues for further reference and investigation.
1)Astronomy Domine-PinkFloyd 2)Fixing a Hole-Beatles 3)World's on Fire 4)Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow-last 2 by Strawberry Alarm Clock 5)Ever into an entire disc so much it all seems like on really long really groovy multi-part song? After Bathing at Baxter's-Jefferson Airplane Hard to switch off in the middle, like "Dark Side" or the side two medley of "Abbey Road" |
