Dig the selections of "White Bird" and "Run" from the Velvets' first album, one I've recently rediscovered. As for "Itchykoo Park", I saw a wonderful direct to video doccumentary about the Faces. Quite fascsinating as well as urges me to buy "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake", which I perceive to be a long lost classic concept piece. Used to hear "White Bird" frequently on the local classic rock station when I worked the graveyard.A friend once remarked, "Of course they know what to play during those hours. They figure 'Hmm,I wonder what kind of people might be listening to radio overnight and what might they be "up" to..."Hence the long album version of "Light My Fire" and Ten Years After's marvelously overextended take on "I'm Goin' Home". |

Great song..Leonard Cohen..Hallelujah. I liked the point about "White Bird" and other Long songs being played in the wee hours. I remember when i was living in Athens, listening to arock station in the small hours, and the D.J. payed "Wish you wer here" all parts, by Floyd, a whole side of an album. I love the whole album "It,s A Beautiful day" ...Bombay Calling, Time is..some real lovley tracks on there. |

Hey Allan...if you can get hold of it, the 1969 version of the It's A Beautiful Day (White Bird) LP is a very different mix on many or all songs. I am not sure, but they may have remixed/rerecorded it in 1971 when "White Bird" became a hit. Some tracks such as "Girl with No Eyes" is very different with harpsichord and vocals. Even "White Bird" has a different feel to it. I always love those kind of details in an album history!
Here is my afternoon 5 favorites!!
1) Tim Buckley "Buzzin' Fly"
2) Yardbirds "Shapes"
3) John Cale & Lou Reed "Forever Changed" (Songs For Drella)
4) John Lennon "Mother"
5) John Prine "Sam Stone"
Forever Changed (Cale) & Hello It's Me (Reed, beautiful with Cale on cello or probably viola)..HA! I snuck in TWO for one!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v6pq4DRjVw

Nice choices Allan! My favourite Syd and ISB songs there. You've inspired me to put them on when I get home after work. |

the best Syd song of course is the version of "Matilda Mother" on the Introduction to Syd Barrett album, which is a minute longer than the version on the 40th anniversary Piper at the Gates of Dawn box set
"There was a boy whose name was Jim..."
And so forth! |

If I Had A Rocket Launcher...with a video by Bruce...briliant! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7vCww3j2-w
Here come the helicopter -- second time today Everybody scatters and hopes it goes away How many kids they've murdered only God can say If I had a rocket launcher...I'd make somebody pay. I don't believe in guarded borders and I don't believe in hate I don't believe in generals or their stinking torture states And when I talk with the survivors of things too sickening to relate If I had a rocket launcher...I would retaliate On the Rio Lacantun one hundred thousand wait To fall down from starvation -- or some less humane fate. Cry for Guatemala, with a corpse in every gate If I had a rocket launcher...I would not hesitate I want to raise every voice -- at least I've got to try. Every time I think about it water rises to my eyes. Situation desperate echoes of the victims cry If I had a rocket launcher...some sonofabitch would die
-Bruce Cockburn
