Cohen always seems like a gentleman & treats his audiences with great respect......maybe that's why he gets our respect back.

Hi Lemonade Kid/Rocker
I agree about "Songs of Leonard Cohen" being the best intro to Cohen. "The Essential Leonard Cohen" is an excellent 2 CD compilation, but I feel that it's too much too soon, and even though it's chronological you miss the distinct atmosphere of each album (a bit like hearing a Love compilation when you haven't heard "Forever Changes"). For an introduction to later Leonard, the obvious choice is "I'm Your Man".
All good things, John E
P.S. The Dylan encounter was definitely like something from "Don't Look Back"!

L.A. in '65 and '66; Haight Ashbury in '66 and '67, all of that defined my musical experience. L.A. was LOVE, and the Haight was the people, before the influx, poets and musicians, and artists. I helped Country Joe break down the equipment after gigs. i gazed at Janice on a sunny, summer's day; watched Don't Look Back, at the "Straight" Theater. LOVE started me on phase two of my musical trip, the first was all the old rockers and rhythm and blues players. I loved seeing Arthur and the guys at the Hullabaloo. Nothing else is like LOVE's music. I left the Haight just at the cusp of the craziness of all the youngsters pouring in, ha, I was only 20, and went up country. I am conscious of going on too much here, but I haven't been back to the message board for a while, and it is sooo good to talk with you folks again.

welcome back, LeeRob! me too , saw LOVE, at Hullubaloo! another big springboard for me was seeing The Byrds/Buffalo Springfield concert at the Valley Music Theater in Woodland Hills. but what was really cool was that big BE-IN at Elesian Park, '67, when Country joe and the Fish, Flying Burrito Brothers, Youngbloods, and Buffy St. Marie played! man, '67 was magical, and yet, it allways gets me: "Seargent Pepper's" is a constant time machine for me, a defining moment of my musical journey!

Sgt. Pepper's does that for me too, bob f.! I was one of those youngsters at 18, LeeRob, but it wasn't until '70 that I arrived in Haight & it was just about over then.....also was in Berekeley at the WRONG time.......That's when they brought out the riot police. Proud to have been arrested in the Vietnam protests, but it was a scary time. I did discover the Youngbloods while out there!!! JC Young is the best......picked up his 'Soul Of A City Boy' LP (MONO, vinyl).... & still enjoy the Youngbloods driving down the highway--'Elephant Mountain'!!

Lemonade...i, too was in San Francisco at the wrong time. Altamont rock festival! i enjoyed the Burrito Brothers, and was so wacked out, i didn't know it was a bummer until i got back to L.A. and heard the news! i did see WAY to many bad things there, but was used to that from the many biker/cop violence at some love-ins at Griffith Park.

but, ultimately...."Forever Changes" changed my life. when it was first released, me and my friends discussed the lyrics , especially, "you set the scene ", grooving on the music, staying up all night and being transported. the vibes bring back my own personal history and emotions. magic .

HA! Oh yeah! Poco! too! Their first two LPs are the best! Grabbed "Pickin' Up The Pieces" in '69 the week it was released. By the way, "Pickin' Up The Pieces " is the only debut album EVER to receive a perfect review rating from Rolling Stone....& I mean EVER!!! That is saying something......... Their 2nd LP has the best live (18 minute) jam....just unbelievable musicianship!
Always been a Buffalo Springfield (with all the incarnations) fan. Did you pick up Neil's first LP in the first month it was released, LeeRob? Most people have never heard the very different & much better mixes of at least four of the tracks. Neil hated the remixes that have been around since that first month's original.
Was that a time?!! CSN, Neil Young, Poco (Richie & Jim, with Randy Meisner) all issuing their first albums around the same time. We had MUSIC, LeeRob! Does anything come close today!!? I'm not a music snob (much!), but am I right?

Hell yes I got Neil's album hot off the press. Good stuff that. I saw the Byrds when Calrence White was handling guitar with McGuinn, at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Great Days! Working Man's Dead! Sneaky Pete! Yee Ha!

Geeze, LeeRob!!! Brunswick is my town! Lived in Maine for 22 years before moving to the midwest 4 years ago due to an illness in the family. I'll be back there one fine day. Lived in Georgetown, Baypoint overlooking Fort Popham the last few years there. Heard Dan Fogelberg (R.I.P) there...guess he died there in Deer Isle.
