This thread has grown so and I forgot it completely! It's like reading a book of the greatest music ever recorded! Thanks all!
Help it grow with your music loves. Please! Every member old & new!
Everyone has a defining moment(s) in their music-appreciation personal history.
Mine was growing up in the 60's psych era. For me, nothing evokes the
period of mind tripping music & puts me back in that place like
Country Joe & the Fish's 'Electric Music For the Mind & Body' or
"When The Music's Over"....or "In My Life" or....you get me.
.......all part of the mind expanding 60's, Vietnam protests, shouts
of revolution & revolutionary music. Amazing time!!
So here I & we can share our music appreciation for all the is the
golden age of ROCK!
Let's hear it for ROCK AND ROLL!!

Hey Kid-
All fans of that earliest Country Joe stuff should be made aware of the truly amazing job on the recent vinyl reissue of "Electric
Music." It was done by Steve Hoffman, who has long been elevated
to a level beyond sainthood in audiophile circles; he IS a seriously
talented guy whose name some may have spotted on the "Forever Changes" alternate mix credits. His Country Joe "Electric Music"
vinyl release is pricey, but is also stunningly worth it. Try it
(the first one's not quite free), you'll like it! |

| I would say it was seeing Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band with Lizzyb at Newcastle City Hall in I think 1972 - just the tightest band you ever did hear. Such a shame old Don decided to retreat to the desert and stop performing - although I did see a great Magic Band gig a couple of years ago. |

Yup as soon as I read the first post, I knew it was Beefheart.
Blown away.
I did manage to string a couple of words together to the great man though. high on fresh air and music - well maybe fresh air, nothing intentional.

Now let me see......1789.....Bronze Age......are we talking.... American Bronze Age here? Seriously though, I do remember We Five's 'You were on my mind' very clearly - although it was not a hit here. In the 60s, songs that had been hits in the States were often covered over here and it was Crispin St. Peters who did really well with that one. Similarly the 5th Dimension's 'Up, up and away' was a big hit in the UK for the Johnny Mann Singers. Once a week though, there would be a radio programme featuring the Billboard Top 20 and that's how I managed to hear the American versions - which to my ears were always far more interesting and I could never understand why the rest of the British record buying public couldn't see things the same way. I did listen to a couple of We Five albums recently - and was startled by the way in which they had developed an early Airplane sound by I think, the second one. |

I could be making this up but wasn't Crispian st P's version, though lovely somewhat sanitised.
I heard the original years later - harrowing song. PF Sloan (I could be making this up).
A bit like There She Goes by the Las sounds so pretty. As Arthur said.

I think you are absolutely right Lizzyb - St.Peters' version lacked the wonderful harmonies that were so prominant on We Five's. My favourite PF Sloan song is the Association's reading of 'When Love Comes to Me'. And then there is Jimmy Webb's own composition about the said writer -
"Cause the last time I saw PF Sloan he was
summer-burned and winter-blown
You know he turned the corner all alone
but he continued singin"
'Rolling Stone' called it a masterpiece. |

this is a great theme.....
for me it was in the rock, celtic and classical tracks...
I've been listening to "Mr.Tambourine Man" for 100 years.. those guitars have jangled me to death..;-)...
Then when the film "Barry Lyndon" came out..I was spending my money on English and German classical composers...
Hearing Steeleye and Fairport for the first time...rock with English folk..genius.
And getting a DVD from RTE Eire on Irish ceili music which goes back many years....well taking a page out of "American Bandstand" with Dick Clark (who's still around btw)..I love the music and I can dance to it...;-)......

Rocker - I've been a fan of 'Barry Lyndon' ever since it was released in '76 - it is almost like an moving version of a painting from the period......Gainsborough or something. Somewhere in the loft I've got a vinyl copy of the soundtrack - and of course the DVD sees quite a lot of action. Anyway, I'm heading of on a seven day tour of the South tomorrow - but I shall return. |

| Hi Lemonadekid - 'Basket of Light' and 'Cruel Sister'. As I recall almost the entire concert was devoted to those two - I still count that one as the best gig I've ever seen. I was delighted to see 'Solomon's Seal' finally get a CD release recently - the tapes had been mislaid for decades - Cheers. |
