I'M listnin to Phil Ochs' "Greatest Hits", which isn't really a hits album 'cause he had no "hits", hence the satiric title. he's wearing a gold-lame suit like Elvis. it says," 50 Phil Ochs fans can't be wrong!", another satiric refference to Elvis' "50 million" remark on his golden hits album! his self-depreciating humor on this , his last studio release, foreshadow's his suicide. this guy is special, and his loss is our loss. rip.

Ochs had such a moral conscience which came out in his fine songs .....When he wrote lines like "nobody is buying flowers for the flower lady" we can get an idea of where he was coming from..Unfortunately i think he wasn't too optimistic of where the times and people were headed .... |

That greatest hits album is a bit too slick for me - not enough of his early stuff on - but all the same, a pretty good document of an extraordinary talent.
If you get the chance, try to listen to one of the Carnegie Hall concerts, where he wore the lame suit and the crowd just didn't get it. |

Right Boomer & Rocker....Ochs was the best. His early protest material is great but when he gets into the personal, retrospective music is when I love it. Pleasures Of The Harbor, Tapes From California, & Rehearsals For Retirement.....love those 3. I don't have Gunfight At Carnegie Hall; it's next on my wish list. Go to the link below to read about the bomb threat shortened first show, the cut hand incident and the 3+ hour second show that started at midnight. Though many were shocked by his look & new material, the majority of loyal fans hung in right to when the Hall cut power to get him off stage and the crowd yelled for power till it was restored!! A historic show. Only half the songs were released. Has the WHOLE show ever been issued??

Don't seem to remember my bootleg copy of the second show being three hours long - definitely only two discs. Will check for you. I also have a nice recording of him in Canada in '66. |

I can only say by what I've read, boombox. If you have the complete second show....well I sure wish his label would see fit (or some indie label like 4MenWithBeards) to issue the complete show. Such a great historical document of Phil Ochs.
