1966 was a magical time for me. It was the year I graduated from high school. As a senior in high school, I was being mocked for being into the 'other' music. Most of my class-mates were still very into Motown. I was listening to The Byrds, the Yardbirds, LOVE, the Beatles, the Stones. I would watch LLoyd Thaxton on TV who always had The Byrds and the Beau Brummels on. Early in '67, the Velvet Underground and Nico would often come to Philly and play at a small venue in town...they were the first rock group I ever saw. Always having people of my generation walking down the street flashing the 'Peace' sign. It was the right time for peaking into adolescence.
I miss those times. I wish I could go back there now knowing what I know today

Allan - One of the the first LPs I could afford to buy was 'The Greatest Hits of Diana Ross and the Supremes' - 'Reflections' still thrills after forty odd years. And as for Holland-Dozier-Holland...what an amazing songwriting team. Unfortunately my classmates used to deride my interest in Tamla - and in American groups generally. Today two of my most treasured CDs are excellent compilations of the Supremes' and Four Tops' classic material - and I'm on the lookout for a similar collection from the Temptations. And so here's to the Motor City - I hope I get to visit it one day. I've already had musical pilgrimages to Greenwich Village and Haight-Ashbury.. and so it could be on the cards! |

Great to hear of that musical "cross-pollination" between the US and the UK during that time...certainly no British "invasion" without those US groups getting filtered through the airwaves over there!..
Yesterday, I was down in NY's lower east side and the "village" and many memories came up of the time we've been talking about. It's true what some say..."You can go home but you can't go back". I have great recollections of that time like Allan noted. It was a time a great creativity for sure!
And as far as musical life in '08, one thing that I really can't help noticing and maybe it's just my orientation of what I'm picking up from the music that people are producing and its that "rock" just lost how can I say its "romantic" longings. And I don't mean not only in a lovey-dovey way but just looking into a future. For want of a better word, rock appears to be "mopey" and the singing is so slack-jawed. I don't know. Maybe it's me. But I know the world has changed since the 60's and rock is reflecting it. |

Exactly, rocker. When Lou Reed did that affectless deadpan style it was kind of cool. When everyone in the world is doing it, it's just depressing.

..so it ain't me then???........something makes me think that I'm not in touch like I used to be back when...the way I see it I wasn't just listening to "top 40" then but other styles of rock/pop. I think today maybe I'm not that plugged in so to speak..heh heh maybe there's some "romantic" stuff out there but I'm not linked up with it...on the other hand maybe 'slack-jawed' is where its at now...i.e when Dylan brought out his harmonica everybody else did too..when harrison did Norwegian Wood the sitar came out...when McCartney stuck in violins on Eleanor Rigby everybody else did too....etc...etc.... |

john9...So how much did you pay for "The Greatest Hits of Diana Ross and the Supremes"???..
Now you brought me back to the first MONO LP on Epic I bought simply titled "The Dave Clark Five". I think it was $3.99. I still have it and now with Denis Payton and Mike Clark gone it's beocme a mem trove.
Anybody else still have that "first one"? |

Rocker - it was a Christmas present in 1968 from my mum and dad. They gave me the money....34 shillings (about £1.75)..and I went down into town to buy it. When I arrived home with it I had to hand it over so that I would not be tempted to play it before Christmas Day. I liked what you said about your walk through Greenwich Village the other day. I was there in '89 and 92. One of my abiding memories was the number of bootleg albums that were openly on sale there - in very great contrast to the situation over here. I'm heading down to the south of France on Friday for ten days....so I'll be back in touch with site after then. Cheers! |

hey you had some smart parents...culturally hip!!...;-).... enjoy yer trip...
PS...Speaking of culture, I really think that Brit invasion had an effect on me. I don't think I'm one of those they call an "Anglophile" but I really have an affinity to England and the people. Loved it when I was there two years ago. We get along jest fine even though we had a little "altercation" a little ways back!!!..... |

Red Telephone...I had to listen to it this based on what's going on with our election..i.e. the talk about how Hillary and Obama would handle that 3am call in the morning on the "red telephone".....got to hand it to Arthur he had his hand on where the pulse of society was! |
