Summer of Love 40th year anniversary concert, Golden Gate Park, yesterday. A great happy day in the park. I saw a bong made out of a watermelon! http://2b1records.com/summeroflove40th/ I heard that Arthur Lee and Love appeared there for the 35th anniversary in 2002.
Kula Shaker in Wolverhampton last night - in over ten years, they have never disappointed me, neither on record nor live and last night was no exception. For me, they are still the best British band from the last twenty years. (And yes, that means better than Oasis, Blur, Razorlight, Kasabian, Snow Patrol, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, Radiohead etc etc.)
Went to gig last night at Trump's Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City. It was 'Experience Hendrix-Celebrate the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix' It was an excellent gig
Featured artist were Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Robby Krieger (yes-the Doors), Mick Taylor (yes-Mayall,the Stones), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Randolf, Corey Glover, Kenny Olson, Andy Aledort, Tommy Shannon, bass; Chris Layton, drums-(Double Trouble from Stevie Ray Vaughn), Eric Gales, Mato Nanji and Doyle Bramhall II.
Introduced by Janie Hendrix...Jimi's sister
This was a 3 hour gig, and it was very, very, good. The highlight had to be a Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Robert Randalf jamming for about 20 minutes on Voodoo Child. Mick Taylor was sensational. Robby Krieger played like it was 40 years ago. Eric Gales was quite amazing.
I didn't know what to expect up front, but I am sure glad I went. Just an awesome gig. Kenny Wayne Shepherd can sure play
Julie Felix tonight. How can a 69 year old still sing and play like she does? Went to see her as she was a name I knew from being on The Frost Report, extracts of which I've seen on histores of Monty Python etc. It was only £10 and there were only about 70 there, but I really enjoyed the show, as did everyone else. Chatted to her afterwards about upcoming projects - seems a lovely lady too.

Wow, that does sound like it would be a whale of a good time. I would especially have liked to see Hubert Sumlin, his sound on Howlin' Wolf's 'Change My Way' on Chess Records always blew me way away. But it looks like the show was already in my area before I knew it.

(Now, where's my fire-blanket??!)
Ah, I'm hearing you boombox.....one of life's great mysteries, why are Kula Shaker so vastly underrated?? Their music rocks, Peasants, Pigs and Astronauts is a contemporary psych masterpiece and Strangefolk proves they are maturing nicely, creating a sound totally original from previous albums. Yet the NME seems determined to insult the band at every opportunity they get (not that it's a major problem considering the worth of NME these days).
You're right, they are Britain's most original band in the past 20 years in my opinion and I don't care if that is slightly biassed.......maybe one day they'll get the recognition they deserve.
This is the time and this is the time and it is time, time, time, time, time, time, time.....
Saw Shack in Glasgow last night - Brilliant gig with a fantastic version of A House Is Not A Motel to wrap things up! Nice seeing Scottish Keith and his mate Paul again too.
My gigs always seem to come along in twos. Went to see Rick Wakeman on Monday. Great evening of stories and music, both solo and with contributions from his band and family members on the screen behind him. Lovely chap to talk to too - had a very off the wall discussion with him about Bill Oddie and his blues singing and also Oddie's enormous appetite when going out for meals! If you get a chance to see the "Grumpy Old Picture Show" give it a go.
