I was really sad to hear of the death of the great actor Edward Woodward yesterday. Not sure how well he was known in the USA (though he had a starring part in the TV series 'The Equalizer' some years ago) but over here, to me, he was just one of those men who was always around. He was, of course, in one of my favourite , films 'The Wickerman'and was, only recently, bringing a touch of class to a guest role in the TV series 'Eastenders'. RADA trained and a fine stage actor, I was lucky enough to see him a few years back in a performance of a play about the life of Gilbert Harding.

One of the greats who will be sadly missed.

Yes, Caryne - a very sad loss indeed. One film that I haven't seen mentioned in the various obituaries is Breaker Morant. Directed by Bruce Beresford, it is set in the Boer War and concerns the court martial and execution of three Australian soldiers...ostensibly for not fighting the war according to the rules....but in actuality as part of a cynical political ploy. It was one of those films which like Picnic At Hanging Rock was from the golden age of Australian film-making.....and it featured an absolute tour de force from our very dear Edward. I also loved him as the Ghost of Christmas Present in Clive Donner's version of A Christmas Carol...the one with George C. Scott. And of course in Michele Dotrice, he had such a very lovely wife.

I've just checked that Guardian obituary...and there is a brief mention of Breaker Morant. Sleep well, Edward.....and thanks.

"..brief mention of Breaker Morant"

That's the one where I remember him the most..for me a great Australian film and he came across as a compelling character during that Boer war. Just got it on blu-ray.
