I enjoy Arthur's love of word play in his lyrics. What are your favorites?
"Between Clark and Hilldale..." of course, but I love the word play on "Love Is More Than Words or Better Late Than Never". Or any that have the lyrical content that just gets you right there (whatever part of the anatomy that may be)?!!
I don't know of many artists who name their songs without any reference to the title in the lyrics. Arthur loved to make us think!!
I can imagine him smiling, anticipating the listener hearing his newest song for the first time....Arthur loved his fans.
What are some of your faves ALL?!!

Yes LK, you've got my two favourites there. In fact, Between Clark and Hilldale would probably be my all time best Love track. All that wonderful imagery issues forth so effortlessly...and is then borne along so by an exceptionally strong melody. The lead guitar breaks and the 'Summer of Love' brass sound serve to transform the whole thing into a little masterpiece. When I first heard Forever Changes, I remember thinking at the end of The Red Telephone that nothing that followed could be better than that. But of course all expectations were exceeded.....and that is why Forever Changes is in my view, the finest rock album of all time. |

Mike Nesmith had a habit of naming some songs titles not found in the lyrics:
"Some of Shellys blues", "Good Clean Fun" ... although NOT "Girl I knew somewhere"! |

examples of Arthur's mind bending lyrical creativity.
i had never heard lyrics like that before. even from the Beatles.
that stuff stuck.

Got my stack o' Nesmith vinyl in front of me....I think I have 8 or 9.

are also on the 3rd volume of the Monkees Missing Links
The Early Stuff compilation for Nesmith (Rhino Records) would seem to be a good starting place for Nesmith's solo work (haven't heard the Prisoner - Mojo magazine rubbished it)

The Prison is a favorite for me, and many I know.....I would trust a MOJO mag review about as far as i could throw it!!  ...or any other review. I make up my own mind about the music I hear and when I agree with a reviewer, I call it luck. Most of MOJO's editors are in their 20's and 30's (no offense)...but that puts them in a different place to be able appreciate or review certain releases.as I would...just my opinion. That's why I put little stock in a good, or bad review.

is showing on AMC this week actually, didn't know of Nesmith's environment
Is that the film where he played a cabbie giving burgler Whoopie Goldberg a ride? |

Dirt Band did some great covers..including Jerry Jeff's Bojangles!....but yes, Nesmith wrote the above great tracks! Early compositions still published by Screen Gems.
Interesting side trips...his brilliant composition "Different Drum" covered by Lovely Linda, executive producer of the cult film "Repo Man", and a Grammy---Video of the Year--- for the hour long "Elephant Parts".
