Mark - New Morning was the first Dylan album I ever bought....back in 1971. I can remember it dividing opinion at the time but it has remained a favourite with me ever since. Similarly, Soft Parade was derided by some upon its release. But I've always held the view that The Doors never made a bad album. They were far more consistent than their Elektra stable mates, Love.....but then they never scaled quite the heights that Love did in 1967-68. |

American Beauty is one of the top albums ever recorded by any band..ever....great find, mk.
And, yes, Soft parade is a fave too...still have my original and rare GOLD label vinyl. The ELEKTRA red label was adopted at the same time so they must have been finishing off the gold labels on Soft Parade.

Love those lyrics on Amer Beaut for Suga Mag...
She can dance a Cajun rhythm Jump like a Willys in 4 wheel drive! She's a summer love for spring, fall and winter, she can make happy any man alive Sugar magnolia, ringing that bluebell, caught up in sunlight, come on out singing I'll walk you in the sunshine, come on honey, come along with me.

Oh yeah Amer Beauty is one of the best, great melodies, great lyrics, and just a good feeling.
John 9, I hope you have tried some other Dylan stuff, particularly John Wesley Harding and maybe Another Side of Bob Dylan. And I don't know about your comment that the Doors never reached the Love high of 1967-8. Their first album in 1967 certainly reached a pretty lofty height.

Hi Mark - I love John Wesley Harding. It has a kind of spiritual quality to it and was a definite leap forward back in 67-68.I think that if I had to choose just one Dylan album then it would have to be Bringing It All Back Home which to me is one of the defining records of the 60s.
The first Doors album, I agree is an absolute classic....and I would also count Strange Days amongst the all time greats. I just feel though that Forever Changes is a true masterpiece scarcely equalled anywhere in popular music. All the other Love albums between 1965 and 1970 are to varying degrees, inconsistent...though of course absolutely essential to most of us here. On the other hand, I think that The Doors over roughly the same period put out six cracking albums...but none that were completely flawless in the way that Forever Changes was.

Set that in stone! The record stands as a bellwether for all musical efforts that ask "what is this?" Those listening get rewarded immensely. Took a while for FC to percolate so people could smell the coffee..... |
