I spent all day yesterday listening to assorted stuff by The New York Dolls and Johnny Thunders as a friend wants us to recommend tracks for his ipod! With the NYD's was there ever a band where so much is wonderful and so much is absolute rubbish?

I am very fond of the covers album, 'Copy Cats' by Johnny Thunders and Patti Palladin (of the wonderful, and criminally ignored, 'Snatch') it's brilliant, especially their cover of the classic 'Love is Strange'.

'The Fitzcarraldo Sessions', a friend gave me this CD for Xmas and I love it. I'm not 100% what it is but, from what I have read, it's a band of french musicians called 'Jack the Ripper' who have recorded an album with guest artists.

Some of the tracks, especially ones with Stuart Staples, Phoebe Killder, Joey Burns and Blaine Reininger, are really quite wonderful, in a strange way, and it just needs listening to

thank you caryne for your honest opinion of ColdplayI! Well I'm going to see what they're next record will be. They sound to me like a 'Philip Glass' rock band with piano and guitars. They have alot of repetition in their melody driven songs.

Officium's cool, eh? I like that cd very much. Marrying Garbarek's sax to medieval stuff. Genius. Who would ever think to pair them like that? Eicher of ECM knows his stuff.

Hi rocker, yup, Officiums a fine thing, ditto the other recording Garbarek's done with Hilliards. As for ECM, I've only scratched the surface of their output through lack of £ - but I reckon Keith Jarrett's 'Koln Concert' would be had to beat. Bloody marvellous : )

One of the dullest bands of the last few years and generally, in the UK, disliked by a hell of a lot of people. Mind you they still sell in large quantities so someone must like them.... I just don't know who

Another thing we can agree on!! (Though the first album, it must be conceded, had a few good tracks)

boom...so maybe it was the 3rd record that did them in X&Y????...

Really I didn't realize some of the bad criticism that's been levelled at them...A NY Times reviewer said they were the most insufferable band of the decade after hearing X&Y..ooh! Of course not all their songs are "great" but I think La Vida with Eno's helped their rock, melodic style.

mikep...I find ECM..(Editions of Contemporary Music) really interesting for the simple reason that they love jazz and classical and are always pushing the envelope with publishing new music. I don't like everything they produce but always curious as to what they have and will take a chance and buy something.

btw I think the Koln Concert could be their biggest seller after all the years.

I just find them really boring, they just seem to plod on and whine in a really irritating way and, maybe for this reason, they seem to get up the noses of so many people. I usually like Eno's work but even he, imo, could not save them. To me, they just seem to try so hard to be worthy and profound and it just comes over as annoying and pretentious.

Still not quite sure why you posted it in the way you did but never mind

I've nothing against falsetto male voices, (and I'm not so sure Chris Martin really is falsetto anyway), I was always quite fond of Frankie Valli and he's pretty high pitched
