What would it have been like if Arthur Lee had ever met Ronnie Van Zant?

Sabbath, Skynyrd Finally Make Hall Of Fame

November 28, 2005

Black Sabbath

After inventing Heavy Metal and helping to define Punk Rock, British imports Black Sabbath and the Sex Pistols will finally earn their rightful spots in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland. Ozzy Osbourne has denounced the importance of the Hall in the past, telling Hall officials in 1999, "Just take [Black Sabbath's] name off the list. Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it's not voted on by the fans. It's voted on by the supposed elite for the industry and the media, who've never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is irrelevant to me." It remains to be seen how the Sabbath frontman will respond to the news of their induction.

The official induction ceremony of the 2006 class will take place on March 13 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Lynyrd Skynyrd also has been voted into the Hall, which is only fitting since one can barely go to a show without hearing someone yell, "Play some Skynyrd, man!" The group also helped to popularize Southern Rock with their mega-hits "Freebird" and "Sweet Home Alabama." New York New Wave pioneers Blondie also will take their place in the Hall Of Fame, as will Jazz great Miles Davis.

On the non-performer side, A&M Records founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss will be inducted for their work with the label they co-founded in 1962. A&M was one of the most successful independent labels in the world as it built the careers of artists such as Peter Frampton, The Police, Joe Jackson, the Neville Brothers, Cat Stevens and Alpert's group, Tijuana Brass. Inductees in the Side-Men category will be announced at a later date.

Meanwhile, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame will give the general public an opportunity to win tickets to the induction ceremony for the first time ever. The institution will hold a raffle for four sets of two tickets for the ceremony, and a raffle ticket costs $100. Net proceeds from the raffle will support educational programs at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum. Visit RockHall.com for details
