First of all, hi everyone. This is my first post, and I must preface my comments by saying I'm a massive Love fan, and a fan of this site. But I have to say that Arthur had a bit of an off night yesterday at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco. I won't go into specifics out of respect for the man, but let's just say his demons took front and center stage for most of the show. He set the scene, and it was a heavier, darker one than I've ever witnessed before. Okay, one classic response to a drunken heckler: "I don't know where you came from, but I know where you're going......Back to the abyss, bitch!"
However, Echols was amazing and vital and supportive, along with Rusty and Mike and the rest!

Hi, Michael, welcome to the board. Thanx so much for your comments. I read with great sadness about the horrible show last night, and I'm hoping that tonight will be better. It's good to hear that you enjoyed Johnny and the rest of the group. They are truly AL's anchors, and my prayers go out to them for a successful show tonight.

LOVE and peace,
FF

I have been a Love fan since the 60's. I saw Arthur Lee do Forever Changes from front to back at the Great American in SF in 2004. It was awesome. Lee played guitar, harmonica, sang with power and confidence.
Fast forward to Thursday night (June 23, 05) at SF's Cafe du Nord ... Lee was, charitably speaking, in less than top form. He could not make it to the stage without help, let alone perform.
The band showed stress as they watched him like hawks to cover him when needed. Rusty Squeezebox may as well have been the lead singer for all the times he had to jump in when Lee couldn't remember the words.
The star for me was Johnny Echols, who I saw for the fist time. He was not just an add-on for old times' sake. The man can still play. Randle was spectacular; Chapple and Green solid in the rhythm section. And of course Squeezbox saved the whole show from falling apart.
Future shows ... let the buyer beware.

You've definitely got that right, JRise -- The star IS Johnny Echols and I'm glad you recognized that fact. Johnny is a saint for putting up with Arthur's madness, which is why he left the band 35 years ago. Now he's back to deal with the same old crap??? I'll say a prayer for him and the rest of the band -- Arthur is and always has been his own worst enemy, and believe me, he's got plenty of them out there

Well, JRise, unfortunately it sounds like you had the same experience I had the previous night. And yes, you and finelyfree are so right... Echols was a true star (along with the rest) for his saint-like patience and guidance throughout this sad show. He frequently whispered into Arthur's ear, and it could only have been positive, because each time Arthur would usually grin sheepishly or have a moment of clarity. Let's hope our Singing Cowboy gets through this little rough patch...

I know this is a stretch...but here goes anyway. When I was very young, I had a friend named Michael Young. Did you ever live in Philadelphia? -West Philly to be exact. On a street named Webster Street. Do you have a sister named Diane? I know there are probably many Michael Young's in this world, but I thought why not give it a shot anyway.

Hey, Allan. No, I'm not that Michael Young. Born in '71 and raised in northern california. Had a great time visiting your hometown a couple years back after a whirlwind roadtrip to new orleans....

Michael-thanks for your reply. The old neighborghood in W. Philly has what we call row houses...they're all attached to each other using common walls. Anyway, Michael Young lived about 5 houses up from me. We used to watch Howdy Doody together (definitely before your time) and we used to crayon in coloring books every Saturday morning. He was a nice boy. I haven't thought about him for a long time until I saw your name.

And there I go 'living in the past again'.

Allan....nice post about your saturday Howdy Doody mornings and coloring books. I was recently contacted by a childhood friend I hadn't seen in twenty years, and we had an eerily similar taste in music/film/books etc...He was even a big Love fan! We even had some of the same favorite songs: The Castle, Maybe the Times, etc..It would be great if you had a similar experience with your 'ol friend Michael.

Hey, Listen Echols.
I don't understand your trip. You stay in one range of the guitar throughout the whole thing. 'Course you're the one who says you can blow in the studio. Nobody to bug you. You gotta blow, Man!

Chocolate and the occasional beer, perhaps? Likewise, if so. I just hope He learns similar restraint, and is trying to do so already. Now IS the time. I want to see an Arthur that is fit, clean and creative, that walks on stage and blazes. And he CAN do it. Last chance. He said recently in an interview that his favourite reading was the Bible. If thst is so, I hope that realises that the superb band now working alongside him is the best he's going to get - is a Godsend, in effect - and that he should treat and use them accordingly. If he does so then good things WILL follow. Abuse and lose. It's clean-up time.

I was at the show in SF. I really enjoyed Arthur's joke about Pete and Repeat. Remember that?
