GENE CLARK

Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers is the debut solo album of Gene Clark, released in February 1967 on Columbia Records, catalogue CS 9418. It was his first effort after his departure from folk-rock group the Byrds in 1966. Though the album was a critical success and it established Clark as a talented singer-songwriter, it appeared very close to the scheduled release date for the Byrds' album Younger Than Yesterday in both the United States and the United Kingdom, hampering its possibilities for commercial success.

[It went on the become Columbia's worst selling album to date--to bad they didn't give it the promotion it deserved, as a Gene Clark masterpiece!! It sold in the HUNDREDS; luckily I have a MONO promo vinyl. What a beautiful jacket cover!-lk]

The musicians on the album include: former bandmates Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke; Wrecking Crew session musicians Glen Campbell, Jerry Cole, and Leon Russell; future Byrd Clarence White; and Clark's future collaborator Doug Dillard. The folk/country vocal duo the Gosdin Brothers added backing vocals, and subsequently received co-billing.

Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers was first reissued in the US in the early 1970s, omitting "Elevator Operator" [thought of as "dated"....it is NOT] and with re-recorded backing tracks designed to "soften" the sound, under the title Early LA Sessions. [Soften the sounds...really? A silly idea as the original is as perfect as an album can be!]

A reissue for compact disc on the Columbia/Legacy imprint in 1991 was titled Echoes, and also (partially) remixed, though closer to the sound of the original album - the most significant change was the removal of vocal double-tracking. Echoes altered the song running order, added "The French Girl" by Ian and Sylvia, "Only Colombe," a demo outtake of "So You Say You Lost Your Baby," and several Clark-penned songs from early Byrds recordings.

Both the 1997 reissue on Edsel Records and the 2007 reissue on Sundazed Records (produced by Bob Irwin) restored the original album mix and track order, with the latter including a number of alternate takes from the album sessions. -wiki

White Light-1971
Gene's second album

Just perfect...

Full album listen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfKEVUuYXm0

White Light, aka Gene Clark, is the second solo album by Gene Clark, former member of The Byrds. It received universal critical acclaim upon its release, but only achieved commercial success in the Netherlands, where rock critics also voted it album of the year. However, like all of his post Byrds' records, it did very poorly on the US charts.

Clark's backing band on the album included bassist Chris Ethridge of the Flying Burrito Brothers, pianist Ben Sidran of the Steve Miller Band, organist Mike Utley, and drummer Gary Mallaber, also of the Steve Miller Band [and the brilliant Jesse Ed Davis-Gene's buddy, partner in crime and another unheralded mega-talent.]

All songs written by Gene Clark, except where noted.

"The Virgin"
"With Tomorrow" (Clark, Jesse Ed Davis)
"White Light"
"Because of You"
"One in a Hundred"
"For a Spanish Guitar"
"Where My Love Lies Asleep"
"Tears of Rage" (Bob Dylan, Richard Manuel)
"1975"
The 2002 Universal/A&M CD reissue adds the following bonus tracks:

"Because of You" (alternate mix)
"Stand by Me" (previously unreleased) (Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller)
"Ship of the Lord" (previously unreleased)
"Opening Day" (previously unreleased)
"Winter In" (rare track)
Personnel[edit]
Musicians[edit]
Gene Clark Ð vocals, acoustic guitar
Jesse Ed Davis Ð electric guitar
Chris Ethridge Ð bass
Gary Mallaber Ð drums
Mike Utley Ð organ
Ben Sidran Ð piano

Gene's hard life & living already showing here in this back cover album photo...but not in music contained on his brilliant album White Light--considered by many to be his best!

These are two wonderful albums, LK. I know that No Other is most critics' favourite - but the two you have documented (along with Roadmaster)are the ones that really speak to me. The new Gene Clark documentary, entitled The Byrd Who Flew Alone was screened here on the BBC a few weeks back.

Hope you're well - I've been out of circulation for a while with work, travel and inward reflection. Cheers.
