I'm currently reading Dominic Priore's new book "The Story of Brian Wilson's Lost Masterpiece SMILE", which documents the main developments in mid-Sixties music very well. There are a few references to Love, in the book. Talking of the rarity of interracial bands, Priore notes that even the Del Vikings would succumb to social pressures and drop the white guys. But he says that "Arthur Lee, would adjust to no such compromise. Folk rock was the music of progressive social change, and Love operated as a band named by the modus operandi of the movement. By 1967, Love would create a masterwork no less brilliant than Smile titled Forever Changes". Love, John E |
