Persistence has paid off...Two nights agao I went on to Amazon, and saw that a copy of "Vindicator" had just gone on sale by a dealer (priced at £12.99). I wasn't too optimistic about what I might get, but today I received a mint, digitally-remastered copy with the extra tracks. It's some thirty years since I last heard the album, and it sounds better than I could ever have imagined. This is a true classic, and needs to be re-issued like yesterday! Love, John E |

Agreed! Vindicator is one of the most under rated albums of all time.
BTW is that you on the Smile DVD? |

Hi John F, I hear that I do make a fleeting appearance on the "Smile" DVD. When they asked me what I thought of Smile, I said something like: "It's a miracle...I've heard the bootlegs, but now Brian's completed it...perfected it. It's a miracle...I'm speechless!". All the best, John E |

Hi Arnstein, Vindicator is Arthur's album from the beginning of the Seventies. It's a bit like Jimi Hendrix meets Little Feat meets Otis Redding, with shades of Tim Buckley! Cheers, John E |

Hmm, speaking as a huge fan of both Otis Redding and Tim Buckley...I'm not sure I can hear either of those comparisons, to be honest! Much as I enjoy Arthur's voice it's never in the league of Otis Redding! |

The big plus is that Arthur is still with us, whereas Jimi Hendrix, Lowell George (Little Feat), Otis Redding and Tim Buckley have all passed on... If Otis was still alive (or for that matter Marvin Gaye, another great musical hero of mine) who knows what sort of stuff they'd be coming up with nowadays |

I've been wondering whether the reunion with Johnny has made Arthur want to 'go back to the drawing board' - or, rather, sound board, and whether this explains why the (over)long awaited new Love album remains exactly that. |

It's a nice thought but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you |

VINDICATOR is a total mind-blower,even 30 years or so after it was issued. To me it's Arthur LEE's personal message of love(!) to the Voodoo Child.I'm afraid Tim Buckley(?)& Otis can't be listed on that particular event, but there are distant echoes of Spirit & Yardbirds instead...Really HEAVY!
BTW,let's not ignore the contributions of musicians the caliber of Charlie KARP & David HULL on that record. They went on to play with the DIRTY ANGELS(2 lp's) & JOE PERRY("i've got the rock&rolls again",his absolute masterpiece,if you love Vindicator,GET IT RIGHT AWAY!).

When describing Vindicator, I didn't mean my description of genre to be taken too literally! However it's recognised that this album sees Arthur trying to sound more black. Certainly a comparison with Hendix is valid and when Arthur pours out his soul on tracks like "Love Jumped Through My Window" there is a touch of Otis Redding there. The groove and guitar breaks on some tracks are vaguely reminiscent of some Little Feat Stuff, and there's a hint of Tim Buckley in Arthur's slower songs. I hope that's more specific! Love, John E |

Whilst I don't disagree with you that he's trying to sound 'more black', I just have to reiterate I, personally, can't hear anything that sounds even the slightest like Redding or Buckley..still, if you do |

At the end of the day, any description of "Vindicator" doesn't do it justice, because it's totally unique. Arthur certainly sounds black though, and Jimi's spirit is definitely present. Key tracks for me are "Love Jumped Through My Window" and "You Want Change for Your Re-Run". I'm sure that Mike and Johnny could make these sound better than ever. I really can't understand the logic of releasing "Out There" and other pointless Love compilations when this classic is just laying dormant. Love, John E |

Maybe to you Jimmyboy but not to all of us. I heard tracks from Vindicator on radio Luxemburg way before it hit the UK shops thanks to Kid Jensen. I preordered it, still have it, and play it as I have done for all these years, so unlistenable I dont think so. I know I will be in a minority here but I'd prefer Vindicator to Four Sail any day if one of those desert island situations came up. I dont think its particularly black its a heavy rock album.Hendrix apart there weren't that many black artists into heavy rock. |
