A fine little film of the beginning and flowering of Strawberry Fields Forever.

George Martin and the famous foursome put more hard work into this one than it sounds like many of today's artists are putting into ENTIRE ALBUMS!Maybe even ENTIRE CAREERS in some cases.Oddly,John Lennon was never fully satisfied with the result! This means that as much as the Beatles' esteemed producer toiled over transferring John's wild LSD fueled imaginations to disc, the actual WHOLE CONCEPT was never really fully actualized according to the famously bespectacled Beatle! |

I think we talk a lot about how Arthur Lee had the idea that the orchestration was to be as much a part of FC as any other aspect....not an afterthought added after the recording as mere dressing.
More than any other group, the Beatles embodied that idea.... first to do it with "Yesterday"...no pop instruments at ALL...just a string quartet.
Then employing it most effectively on Peppers & Strawberry Fields Forever. Brilliant!

certainly influenced Nick Drake
whats cool is it REALLY REALLY works! The strings work and are fully incorporated into the music. The best example of this is when Arthurs scat singing on ...Between Clark and Hilldale and the horns reflect what hes coming out with!

And let's not DARE forget the heavy influence of the Beach Boys' masterpiece "Pet Sounds".The Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" approach was inherited by the genius known as Brian Wilson and quite dutifully taken to notice by the Fabs right there at that very special space in time.(Hmmmm, a space in time..also a great Ten Years After album!) |

And let's not forget that PET SOUNDS and Brian Wilson were completely inspired by the Beatles' Rubber Soul. It caused Brian to rise to the occasion and create Pet Sounds....which in turn inspired the Beatles during Sgt. Peppers.

I think McCartney was so taken at the time by Pet Sounds he was advertising the album in ads to get people to latch on to it! |

Whenever I see one of those "best albums ever" lists,or at least the last time I looked at one, there seems to be a tie in between the top five or six.Bob Dylan exerted HIS influence on the Beatles' writing process(particularly John Lennon) through albums like "Highway 61" and "Blonde on Blonde" which in turn was,as you mentioned,Joe,the impetus of influence for "Rubber Soul" which really turned Brian Wilson on so that HE made "Pet Sounds" that reflected massively back on the Fabs' for "Pepper".Usually, all of these masterpieces generally make the top ten of most of these surveys.Today, there is a dreadful lack of dutiful inspiration coming from ANYBODY ANYWHERE.While many of today's performers of alternative cite the Velvet Underground as a highly seminal influence among other sources, but NO ONE seems to possess any inherent ability to duly influence others in any measurable palpable form whatsoever. This is one of the myraid of reasons why I say the artistic process is nowadays cloyingly cluttered with too many IMITATORS and not nearly enough INNOVATORS.I know this is the age of "It's all been done" so here's a reasonable alternative to the creative processes of today. My advice to these youngsters now is to approach this thing just as today's classical musicians approach THEIR craft. If EVERYTHING has INDEED been done then....CONJURE UP YOUR OWN APPROACH TO THE CLASSICS!Look at all the classicals who are redoing the same hundreds of years old melodies and symphonic movements AS UNIQUELY AS POSSIBLE!Many a classical scholar can indeed differentiate the difference between some 1967 recording of a classical masterpiece and the 1979 version of the same.Forget original writing,it's all been done(at least with the exceptions of a few new ideas I do see from time to time).JUST REDO THE CLASSICS,particularly seldom heard yet wildly inspiring non-single album cuts. |
