Not to differ, but I remember now it was on the B-side of Capitol 45rpm release of "She Loves you"...
That the song was intended as the next single is confirmed in interview by both John and Paul in 1963. John stated "The B-side of 'She Loves You' was meant to be the A-side," which McCartney elaborated, "If we write one song, then we can get going after that and get more ideas. We wrote 'I'll Get You,' which is the B-side, first. And then 'She Loves You' came after that...We got ideas from that. Then we recorded it."
After being convinced that "I'll Get You," which has a similar tempo and rhythm as their last single "From Me To You," would fit the bill for their next single, that all changed on June 26, 1963. In a Newcaste-upon-Tyne hotel room after a show, they were inspired to write "She Loves You" which made "I'll Get You" pale in comparison. Lennon later dismissed the song, saying "That was Paul and me trying to write a song...and it didn't work out." This quote from 1980 may indicate Lennon's final opinion of the song, but that doesn't damper the fact that "I'll Get You" is one of the most loved B-sides of their career...
At some point during the hectic British touring schedule of June 1963, Lennon and McCartney convened at John's former home at Menlove Avenue to write their follow up single to "From Me To You." They rarely wrote there, partly because of John's Aunti Mimi disapproving of his music and also because "the necks of our guitars were always banging," McCartney relates, while they sat together on the bed songwriting. One of the exceptions was this occasion where they wrote a song that has always been one of Paul's favorites, "I'll Get You." It's been estimated that they completed the song within a two to three hour period of time.
"It's got an interesting chord in it," Paul continues, "'It's not easy to pre-tend...' That was nicked from a song called 'All My Trials' which is on an album I had by Joan Baez." The first line of each verse contains a similar melody line over the same chord change, such as the fourth verse which states "If living were a thing that money could buy..." "It's like D, which goes to an A minor, which is unusual," Paul explains, "you'd normally go from a D to an A major. It's a change that had always fascinated me, so I put it in."
Lyrically, Paul explains the inspiration for the song as well: "To me and John, though I can't really speak for him, words like 'imagine' and 'picture' were from Lewis Carroll. This idea of asking your listener to imagine, 'Come with me if you will...', 'Enter please into my...', 'Picture yourself in a boat...' It drew you in. It was a good little trick, that. Both of us loved Lewis Carroll and the Alice books and were fascinated by his surreal world so this was a nice song to write."

"Bother Me" is a fine early album track.Harrision always maintained sufficient handle on whatever the current flavor of expression was for the Beatles at any particular moment in their estemed career. As ideologies advanced, use of studio technologies became more and more necessary for proper artisitc conveyance and soft drugs began to creep its way onto the pop music scene,Harrison matured in kind with some wonderfully captivating lyrical and musical concepts.Hard to believe that the man who penned "Don't Bother Me" also gave us "Within You Without You" and "Something".Then on the other hand,it is an equally obtuse conception that the same writers who gave us "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You" dutifully enthralled us with marvelously evocative pieces such as "Strawberry Fields" and "Fixing a Hole". |

Just to offer a UK perspective on this - because of the way in which our earlier Beatles albums were configured, several did not actually contain singles. This gave rise to the notion of 'the single that never was'. I think that It Won't Be Long was a prime example of this - a gloriously pulsating album opener with an original and exceptionally strong melody with those wonderful harmonies and ringing guitars. Similar examples would be No Reply or Eight Days A Week......which of course was a single on the other side of the pond. I can tell you that that caused a lot of confusion and argument in the school playground! The most amazing thing is that these little gems were in all likelihood penned in the back of their van in the time that it took to drive from London to Brighton! And I doubt whether many people back in 1963-64 realised that they were living in the midst a true renaissance. |

Early on,although the Fabs were prodigously focused on bringing cliche boy/girl concepts into full flavor, they did indeed intrigue their audience with many wonderfully entrancing musical endeavours. However,as successful as this earlier tuneful diatribe was,the Beatles soon became appointed poet lauriats and even anthropological prophets in the minds of some.As this unexpected path took many esoteric twists and turns,it now seems that in lieu of being intimitated by their new found roles as generational trail blazers, the boys alternately found such inspirations blazingly fueled their collective inherent intention to provide us all with marvelously rich pastels of sound. |

On my ride into work today, I listened to Rubber Soul, the whole thing. It really changed my mood and put me in a good zone, exactly what I want out of music. These guys deliver.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful love songs ever, they are words that go together well.

Right on Mark - I think that if there is one album that illustrates the true genius of the band, then it is Rubber Soul. It is also the one that shows the influence of folk the most...... I'll try to find time to play it today....I'm working from home! |

Revolver too. Such a sonic groundbreaker.
