this one credits Love at the Whiskey 1966? But I can't say if they were on the same bill as the DOORS at this time...still cool to see.
....it would be nice if this was THE GRASS ROOTS of pre-Love!
From the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium 1966
And these articles about Hendrix, Arthur etc....

Great photos LK. Really stunning. Personal fave is the one of Johnny holding the tambourine. Arthur and Johnny epitomise 'cool' in my eyes. |

These are absolutely fanatastic, LK - some of the best I've ever seen. Time to get that time machine built and to set the controls for Santa Monica, 1966! |

Thanks guys...here are a couple more (below) from that Santa Monica show (I like the Go-Go dancer in the background from the (above) set.
This may be one of my favorite all time shots of Johnny & Michael
This one I enhanced for Michael...he liked it better than the original we all know so well...but he never really liked that original at all.
A couple more pieces that I did for Michael
Please feel free to use for personal use but copyright is MSW & SWE 2011

There's definitely something about publicity and artwork from the Forever Changes era. LK - thanks again..... you should consider writing another book on Love. |

Can anyone make out what the album covers are posted to the right of the stage? What is the purpose...signed copies displayed to show them off? Upcoming shows?

That version of the Grass Roots looks like the "other" version. I wonder what song they were doing with Arthur on twin - neck guitar and Johnny out front at the microphone? |

Yeah...what was Arthur doing on Johnny's twin neck guitar....he certainly wasn't better on it! I'll see if I can get an answer from Johnny or Michael....
Yeah...the OTHER Grass Roots that caused "LoVE" to come into being! Cool!

Yes - the other Grass Roots were almost the equivalent of the English group (which included Ronnie Wood), The Birds...... who layed on a hostile greeting to The Byrds when they first visited the UK in 1965....and who were immortalised in a couple of lines from Eight Miles High: Nowhere is there warmth to be found From those afraid of losing their ground
Interestingly, last year, a new version of The Birds got together with founding member, Ali McKensie.
Love - Grass Roots - The Birds - The Byrds............what's in a name eh? It all helps to rake in the lolly! |

Could the album covers at the Whiskey be Johnny Rivers Live At The Whiskey? It seems that he recorded a few live albums at that venue. When I was in Los Angeles in the summer of 1979, I saw The Motels at The Whiskey. If only I had been there in the previous October, but "that's the way it goes".As always thanks to LK ! |

Johnny Rivers was the one who really got the Whiskey success story stared I believe. Then, LOVE & THE DOORS took over the mantle as Rivers' star faded....for a while.

Dukie....
This from Michael in answer to your question about the pic with Arthur on the double neck guitar and Johnny on tambourine and lead vocal....I asked what song would put them in each others shoes!?
"The only song this could be is "Revelation" where Arthur starts it off on Johnny's guitar and Johnny is doing the vocal, which is the way it is on the record as well." ...M.S-W

These last two are magnificent, LK. I think that there's a colour version of the Out Here poster on Ebay. As for Your Mind and We ...I've definitely never see that issue before. I'v got a friend who has an original UK version of that one..I shall ask him to check it out. Cheers! |
