Probably the best debut ever recorded by any band is probably Moby Grapes - one never tires of hearing that, and I've been listening to it since having it on vinyl and playing it on a rubbish phonograph in the late 80s for the first time

you got the Beatles 1st album, which is a wonderful mix of originals and covers (Twist and shout)

the first Pink Floyd album is good, particularly in mono,
but I think the songs on the 1st Moby Grape album are stronger;they never really topped it

The Band, the Kinks (well, maybe not the Kinks) and Dylan all released very good debut albums, but Moby Grape probably had the strongest collection of songs

Hey Grandma - great opener

Mr Blues - okay! - great harmony vocals backing up Mosley though!

Fall on you - great great track. Do you see a pattern here?

805 - Beautiful ballad. What more to say? lovely. just lovely

Come in the morning - Terrific. Great vocals on the fade. Terrific, absolutely terrific

Omaha - Why not Listen my friends? only Skips analyst knows for sure. Gets really exciting - Skip's standout

Naked if I want to - only a minute long. But - hey! its fun, and its a good track. The Residents did a whole album of minute songs (the Commercial Album) but none of them were as good as this

Someday - pretty heartbreaking. Skip gets a cowrite. Amazing track. Terrific fade/vocals on the fade. Absolutely heartbreaking there as well

Ain't no use - fun track. Terrific backing vocals. Terrific lead vocals as well. Really strong track. Like all of the songs on this side (2) actually

Sitting by my window - Later cut by Peter Lewis on a solo track. Probably still does the track live. Has to. Its absolutely lovely. Great guitar, vocals. Played live on tv with the image gone purple

Changes - another rocker. Lot of fun. Great scat singing on the fade. Good song. Ho hum - another really good song on this album of really good songs!

Lazy Me - Best song on the album? Nice use of Frere Jaques on the fade! Songs only a minute and a half and its absolutely amazing. Christ. Theres no weak link on either side

Indifference - Terrific side closer. What a beautiful day it has been! Yes indeed.

God what a terrific album. "Mr Blues" is probably the "weakest" song, and even thats great cos of the backing harmonies. Wheres that old Mr Blues man?

Big fan of Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica".Looking forward to hearing his freshman release.Gonna go a little primal and go with Elvis' self titled debut. Not necessarily my favorite under this heading, but sometimes I like to go back beyond latter more culturally sophisticated works and pay homage to the past maaster who gave THOSE artists initial inspiration.

"Trout Mask" is great but not Beefheart's debut. But it's hard to beat "Safe As Milk".

Tom Waits may have been far from his later work with his debut "Closing Time", but it is one of my favorites.

The Doors of course, although people favor LA Woman

I haven't heard Other Voices and Full Circle, so can't comment on them post Morrison

unfortunately the Doors remastered their old albums with new intros and strange strange mixes (like adding a backing vocal echo on Roadhouse Blues)
I don't know why they did that. Very weird to be listening to "LA Woman" and theres a few discordant notes kicking it off!

Grace (Jeff Buckley) is good, but does it count if it was the only album cut by the artist?

THe Doors and Jimi gotta be 1 & 2 or 2 & 1, but I'd put Traffic in third.

which version of Traffic's Mr Fantasy? the UK or US?

I still miss the old gatefold of their second (Traffic) with the lyrics - thats my current fave by Traffic, though the first album I got by them (on vinyl natch!) was their swansong from 1974 When the Eagle Flies from Its Only Rock and Roll in NYC!

Blues Magoos "Psychedelic Lollipop" has always been a favorite!
The Bronx boys where at the forefront of psychedelic music in 1966!
(So were Love with Da Capo, but who remembers THEM?!!)
