Thanks Captain America. Although in fairness my living conditions here are a far cry from the average Bangladeshi. My university provides us with a decent flat in which we're able to live comfortably.
It's a vast difference to the conditions I lived in during my time in Rwanda. In truth I'm here earning a salary as I couldnt afford to be a volunteer again. The year in Rwanda was fantastic but there comes a time when your bank manager tells you that volunteering is no longer viable!
There are obviously depressing sights in Bangladesh but my university is a very positive place to be as the students here are incredibly intelligent and hard working, and many will go on to make a difference in their respective countries. |

kula..Looks to me that if anyone tried to put any scheme of organization onto that chaos it could prove to be an impossible task. And definitely one needs to have eyes in the back of yer head to survive over there on the "roads taken." I can only imagine what happens at night.

Thanks John once again. I have friends who have spent some time there. They tell me of the unbelievable contrast in wealth within the country - with vast numbers of poor people alongside tremendous oppulence. "Like Elizabethan manors" was the phrase they used. My own very recent travels have taken me to some amazing places....Zurich, Basel, Berne, Strasbourg and Fribourg (on the edge of the Black Forest)all in the last six weeks. And on Wednesday I head off to Munich and then Salzburg. I'm trying to get in as much as I can........before the new soccer season starts! Cheers and take care. |

Rocker - yeh, it's a mess which probably works as well as possibly ever could!! Bigger vehicles aren't permitted on the roads in the daytime so they all clog the roads at night....it's carnage and treacherous.
John - Yep, I've heard India is much the same, possibly worse. I'll actually touch on this in my next blog as I have some interesting examples of the class divide in my apartment block. Very envious of your European travels. Europe has some incredible cities. Have fun in Munich and Salzburg. You know what makes me most jealous?....the beer options!! Here in Chittagong we have no beer options! |

I don't know kula but I think the humidity would get me quick but I'd think I'd be intrepid enought to hang out in Chittagong. heheh I'd tough it out! In any case, I think you've got an experience. Any converstaions with the locals? How do they view the "foreigner' in their midst? If it was me as an "American" would I get the slings and arrows???? I'm sure there's probably a class divide but you wouldn't pay no notice if I know you from your writings. Good luck and keep cool kid....... |

Hi Rocker...yes I got back just before midnight on Sunday. Munich (in fact, the whole of Bavaria) was a first for me. It is a truly beautiful city with a rebuilt and breathtaking medieval centre. But of course there are many reminders of more recent times. I tarried for a while in Odeonsplatz, where Hitler's attempted takeover came to grief in 1923. And I also stood in Konigsplatz - a square dominated by classical buidlings - and where Chamberlain, Daladier, Hitler and Mussolini concluded the ill fated Munich agreement of 1938. Additionally, I had some great day excusions - Salzburg just over the border in Austria - here I paid a visit to the house in which Mozart was born. And to the Bavarian Alps where mad King Ludwig built those fairytale castles....including the one used in the Disney logo. Cheers
Kula John - you are exactly right about the beer. I'm more of a wine man myself, but I do enjoy some of the lighter beers you can get over there. And........I did have one for you as well! All the best. |

Hi all Just an update to say I've added a new blog entry from Bangladesh. Apologies it's been so long since the last one, but I was back home in the UK for a few weeks during the university summer break. A combination of dog walking and test match cricket on the tv kept me away from the blog writing for a bit. However, I'm now back in South Asia ready to begin the new school year so hopefully I'll have some more stories and experiences to pass on over the coming weeks and months. As always you can read the new blog by clicking on this link, http://www.johnstanlake.com/blog.html or this one, http://johnstanlake.wordpress.com/2011/09/06/all-in-a-days-work/ Best Wishes, Kula John

Haha thanks John and YES...fantastic news. We sit glued firmly to the foot of the whole football league after our dramatic fall, however, this whole mess has brought the club and the fans together and even though we have to start from scratch again I feel we have a bright future ahead! There could be a few more lows but evetually we'll get there. |
