Hi all,

So you may notice from my location status that I'm teaching in Chittagong, Bangladesh now. I'm writing a new blog from here so if anyone's interested you can find it here and subscribe if you so wish!

THanks!

A fascinating read, Kula John. I really enjoyed your writings from Africa...and I look forward many more during this current venture. I just wish that during my own teaching career, I had moved outside my comfort zone a litle more more.....though I did once (in 2000) spend a week going into different schools in Tokyo. Cheers, John

THanks John. Yeh, I hope to be able to keep the updates regular but as I'm sure you well know, teaching eats up a lot of your time! I often don't feel like I ever turn off from teaching. That next lesson plan is always in the back of mind and I don't think I'm ever truly on top of things with planning and marking, etc!

You know if you did ever fancy using your own teaching experiences abroad, VSO offers some great opportunities in developing countries. They're very flexible about the length of time you can offer so you can do anything from a month to 2 years. I met many teachers in Rwanda working with VSO who were at various stages of their lives. Some were retired teachers who were passing on their expertise to local teachers and others were on career breaks or had been granted a short leave of absence by their schools in the UK. This sounds like I'm advertising for VSO but I'm not actually related to them in any way!

That's a good question. I'm not actually sure. I imagine they would as GH was clearly dedicated to the country and from my first few weeks here it's clear that many people are still in desperate need of help. It's an unjust world we live in.

I'm quite sure Olivia Harrison is on top of this among many other world social issues just as I hear George's old band mate Paul contributes to causes concerning animals and land mines.I think there still remains a Hindu temple Harrison helped to fund in London.

Appears there are some lovely landscapes over here and the children in these photos seem to be much better fed and clothed and healthier than in the stills taken around the time of the big Harrison benefit in'71.Glad to see some progress has been made. I know that for years, there was much litigation over the proceeds from the concert and I think it took years for a significant amount of the funds raised to reach Bangladesh. Is there sginificant relief coming in from UNICEF or the many Catholic charitable organizations?

I'm really not sure to be honest. I can't say I've noticed their presence in the few weeks I've been here so far. I understand there are a lot of NGO workers in Dhaka and I've noticed here in Chittagong there are one or two missionary run english schools. I would imagine unicef are doing work here because the poverty is still really prevalent.

Do most of the people their continue to hold to their religious faiths through all of the environmental and social tumult?Sounds like conidtions sure would provide a true test of resolve in this area.

Next update

'Reptile hurling, a useless bandana and the tale of a cup of tea that ended in chaos.'

Enjoy!

And in answer to your question Captain (apologies for not replying sooner) as far as I can tell so far, religion is a core part of daily life here. You're right though, seems to me like the daily struggles must make some people question their higher beliefs.

Most people of Hindu faith are FAR more true to their core of inner beliefs than just about everybody I know who CLAIMS to be Christian only to turn around and flagrantly committ acts anthetical to church doctrine, usually for political or material gain, behaviors that as you know are rightfully and thoroughly shunned by the Hindus.I guess I'lll have to start handing out some George Harrison records to these cretons.

I applaud you on your humanitarian efforts,Kula.I myself don't believe I could EVER muster up the emotional strength or dutiful constitution enough to surround myself with such abysmal and disheartening living conditions such like the ones of your experience while attempting to assist in remedying the situation.God bless.
