A truly great guitarist, LK. For me, one of Fairport's most sublime moments is that rhythm change and bridge in Autopsy....with our old mate Sandy on vocals of course. Ah....Unhalfbricking....yet another cornerstone of western civilisation.  |

Not a contest here, just a matter of taste. Nick is great beyond words and his talent on guitar is undisputed--also top ten. But Nick's talent was how he wove his vocals around his guitar work.
Thompson's history is made of greatness...from his teenage days as a brilliant Fairport Convention member and central figure, to his days with Linda and beyond. Like Nick, it was about what he wanted to play, with less regard for commercial success in the conventional sense. Of course they wanted to make a living at what they love. In doing so they both carved out a loyal and still growing "cult" following....thumbing their noses at the mainstream.
But this is about Richard Thompson, not Nick Drake, today. Drake's subject/thread here is well established and honored.
This is about Richard....

you ever hear the guitar only track for "Black eyed dog"? Man, that is frightening!
turned up on Tanworth in Arden II or Time has told me (I forget volume 1 or 2
apparently by that time he couldn't play guitar and sing at the same time, which is troubling cos earlier he had played guitar and sang with the orchestration on "River man" !
I've always been intrigued by Thompsons relationship with Nick. Clearly he liked the songs enough to play on them, regardless of what Boyd wanted. If Fairport Convention were backing Nick up on Bryter Layter, there must have been a respect there. I think Nick even opened up for Fairport around the time of Liege and Lief, so clearly they mutually enjoyed each others music, regardless of whether they were both on Witchseason
but I think Richard might have been a little jealous of Nick, and he might have been going the same way there for a while, around the early 70s. What with not cashing royalty checks, being indifferent to his appearance, and so forth
Didn't Harry the Human Fly sell like 5 copies? I'm assuming that album is still out of print
Pour Down Like Silver is VERY good, and there seems to be a song about Nick on that as well. "The shame of doing wrong" is kinda katchy! |

Pour Down Like Silver is my favorite. Nick (b. 1948) and Richard (b. 1949)- contemporaries....Nick being the elder  would have been someone for Richard to look up to--Nick had all appearances of reaching his artistic maturity already while Richard was still "developing" his identity...though during his groundbreaking early days many of his masterpieces were written-- while with Fairport. Clearly the fact that Nick was going solo would have been of interest to Richard and something to envy.
The documentary of Richard Thompson, "Solitary Life", would have been just as appropriate a name for a "life of Nick Drake" documentary.

I said I hoped it was lovely for everyone else as well, at which Her Majesty laughed and moved along. I was part of a larger group chatting to Prince Philip, who was telling jokes and being one of the 'chaps'. The Duke and Duchess of Kent, and the Duchess of Wessex were also there. The latter was very nice, and probably the most interested in music. I was disappointed the Queen didn't ask me about working with Nick Drake."
