I've always liked 'December will be magic again' by Kate Bush
Here's a nice live version from the great lady...

A wonderful choice Kula John. I remember very vividly stoppping off at Our Price in Leicester Square to buy the single - it was not of course on any album. And I also remember that TV Christmas special - it was remarkable for the fact that it included early versions of songs like Egypt and The Wedding List that would not be released until the Never For Ever album ten months later. Tomorrow I drive down from Cheshire to Winchester for the festive period........and I'm taking the This Woman's Work box set to play on the way. Cheers!
Oh, England.......my Lionheart |

I'm always searching round and rediscovering/discovering Christmas music as I get so bored with the same ones being played on the radio. Here's some I've been listening to this year, all styles:
The Man With the Bag, Kay Starr (1960) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAmmqXVmIAk
Christmas Celebration, B B King (1961): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP2q05Y2yZo
From the sublime to the ridiculous as they say, Ho Ho Ho... The Turtles (released as The Crossfires), Santa and the Sidewwalk Surfer (1963) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCrWz9n3aqk
The Trashmen, Dancing with Santa (1964) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV5UKXh3kcc
Marvin Gaye Purple Snowflakes (1964) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQVeKb0ywOw
The Sonics, Santa Claus (1965) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBJDERsbxpc
Clarence Carter, Back Door Santa (1968) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMj4Q6EVOW0
Christmas is My Time of Year, Christmas Spirit This is a rare track from 1968, can't find Zevon being involved as the guy who's streaming it on his blog says. Information I've googled says Howard Kaylan, Mark Volman, Linda Rondstadt, Gene Parsons, Gram Parsons, Clarence White were on the session plus, as you can hear, anyone else who was hanging round at time. Inferior version by the Monkees released later: http://poppacool.blogspot.com/2010/12/christmas-spirit-christmas-is-my-time.html
Jimi Hendrix with the Band of Gypsys, Little Drummer Boy/Silent Night/Military March/Auld Lang Syne (1969): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXrWJ-p1unE
Ending with a couple of earlier ones: I'll be Home for Christmas, Pilgrim Travellers (1954): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L3tTs4KBCE
finally in my opinion the best version of White Christmas with great accompanying cartoon, The Drifters 1955, Bill Pinkney lead bass, Clyde McPhatter on tenor, if you just click one of my selections this is the one, enjoy and a good holiday season to all on the board: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ooc5eJc5SHA

Yea, totally agree with The Difters and Clyde doing White Christmas, although Otis Redding does a pretty good one himself. |
