A few of my favorite quotes from Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and his writings...

Kilgore Trout:

And here, according to Trout, was the reason human beings could not reject ideas because they were bad: “Ideas on Earth were badges on friendship or enmity. Their content did not matter. Friends agreed with friends, in order to express friendliness. Enemies disagreed with enemies, in order to express enmity.

“The ideas Earthlings held didn’t matter for hundreds of thousands of years, since they couldn’t do much about them anyway. Ideas might as well be badges as anything.

“They even had a saying about the futility of ideas: ‘If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.’

“And then Earthlings discovered tools. Suddenly agreeing with friends could be a form of suicide or worse. But agreements went on, not for the sake of common decency or self-preservation, but for friendliness.

“Earthlings went on being friendly, when they should have been thinking instead. And when they built computers to do some thinking for them, they designed them so much for wisdom as for friendliness. So they were doomed. Homicidal beggars could ride.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------

At the end of Cat’s Cradle, as the world is coming to an end, Vonnegut quotes from the Book of Bokonon, "I would write a history of human stupidity, and I would climb to the top of Mount McCabe and lie down on my back with my history for a pillow...and I would make a statue of myself...grinning horribly, and thumbing my nose at You Know Who (CC 231),"

When asked about Jesus Christ, he states, "oh, Him. People have to talk about something just to keep their voice boxes in working order (CC 140)."

In Slaughterhouse-Five, he summarizes his opinions with the comment; "among the things Billy Pilgrim could not change were the past, the present, and the future (SF 60)."

Words of wisdom and quotes to live by from Satchel Paige, possibly (but sadly, we'll never know) the greatest pitcher major league baseball ever saw, and a long-time member of my own all-time favorite baseball team, the Kansas City Monarchs. Satchel made his major league debut in 1948, as a 42 year old rookie ("Sorry, boy, wrong color"), and pitched his final major league game when the Beatles ruled the music world and the Byrds were on the charts, in 1965, at age 59....

"Age is a case of mind over matter; if you don't mind, it don't matter."

"Keep moving, don't slow down, and don't look back; something might be gaining on you."

"Go light on the vices, such as carrying on in society; the social ramble ain't restful."

Groucho Marx. 'I wouldn't want to belong to a club that would have me as a member'

G.M. again, cannot remember it exactly.........On the radio........On being told that a woman on the line had 15 children he said. "Jeeez lady I like a cigar but at least I take it out of my mouth sometimes". He was banned from the airwaves for a long time after that.

ok this sin't exacyly a "quote"..figure a bunch of quotes...

This in honor of one of the greatest comedy duos in history Abbott & Costello..Just to "set the scene"..Costello wants to marry Hillary but he has to get in good with her father who's a country boy by learnin' the farm life.....Fields has the perfect prescription!
Arguably better when you see it!!!!!!!!

Costello: Mr. Fields can you tell me something about the farm life? If I was to work on a farm what would my chores be?

Abbott: He knows how to milk cows.

Fields…Oh my boy milk cows? That's just one of the things you do on a farm …Oh there's lots of things that you do on a farm….Now listen to me carefully and I'll give you an idea
.
First, you get up 3 o'clock in the morning…. Now you milk 30 to 40 cows….after that you go down and carry in 15 to 20 buckets of water from the well…… after that you chop down a tree and make 15 or 25 or 30 cords of firewood…, you take the firewood… cut it up….. and get it all set and then you feed 200-300 chickens and then you feed 50 or 60 goats… then you slop the hogs …….and ZINGO you're ready for breakfast!!!!!!...

Costello: I'll have a piece of toast I don't want to waste too much time!!!!

Fields: After breakfast it's very simple…. you go out and you fix the tractor….takes 3-4 hrs to fix the tractor.. then you plow about 5 or -6 or 7 or 8 acres of ground… after that you dig and dig and dig in the potato patch… you dig out 5-6 bushels of potatoes… then you go out to the barn and you pitch 16-20 tons of hay…. after you pitch the hay you go out to the orchard… you pluck15 or 20 boxes of apples… you crate the apples ….you sort the apples …..then you take fertilizer…5 or10 tons of fertilizer …fertilize the onion patches…. and ZINGO you're ready for lunch!!!!!!….

Costello: I'll just put a little piece of butter on my toast… I don't want to waste too much time.

Fields: After lunch now that's when you have fun!!… you dig a drainage ditch around the 1st 40 acres of the farm… then you fix the other 40 acres of fences all around the other side..then you churn about 200 pounds of butter… then you trim the hedges ….it's about 5 miles of hedges… after you trim the hedges you fill the lanterns…150 lanterns…. then you bed down about 200 cows ….you curry 150 horses and….. ZINGO you're ready for supper!!!!….

Costello: All I do is eat!!!!!

“If you are thinking about something that happened a long time ago:
Somebody asked you a question and you did not know the answer.
That is my name.”

“The bookstore was a parking lot for used graveyards. Thousands of graveyards were parked in rows like cars. Most of the books were out of print, and no one wanted to read them any more and the people who had read the books had died or forgotten about them, but through the organic process of music the books had become virgins again.”

--Richard Brautigan, Trout Fishing in America

“because you always have a clock strapped to your body, it's natural that i should think of you as the correct time: with your long blonde hair at 8:03, and your pulse-lightning breasts at 11:17, and your rose-meow smile at 5:30, i know i'm right.”

• What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.
~ Crowfoot, Blackfoot Warrior & Orator

• I am tired of talk that comes to nothing. It makes my heart sick when I remember all the good words and all the broken promises. There has been too much talking by men who had no right to talk.
It does not require many words to speak the truth.
~ Chief Joseph: Nez Perce 1840-1904, Nez Percéé Indian chief

• We must protect the forests for our children, grandchildren and children yet to be born. We must protect the forests for those who can't speak for themselves such as the birds, animals, fish and trees.
~ Qwatsinas, Nuxalk Nation

• How smooth must be the language of the whites, when they can make right look like wrong, and wrong like right.
~ Black Hawk, Sauk
