reading through the most recent Mojo (well, here in the States) - in an issue devoted totally to Elektra (along with the bonus cd) there was a whole section devoted to the guy who designed Love's logo (along with Clear Light, etc) - a Harvey

now its interesting, you would think that Arthur had come up with the logo, what with him having the rights to the name.

I remember in an early issue of the Castle that Housden had to redesign the Love logo he was using in his issue cos Arthur complained, and yet it was back to the Love logo in later issues

and I don't think Michael Stuart was allowed to use the Love logo on the cover of his new reissue of Pegasus Carousel

So who owns logos anyways? Elektra? Arthur Lee? Clear Light?

I understand Harvey even kicked a band off Elektra cos they didn't want his design (!)

Thankfully Love had a neat design

Einarson could answer this best, but I seem to recall that Michael said that Diane Lee/Arthur Lee Estate owns the logo...for some reason she would not renew the logo for Michael's Publisher's reprint. Maybe she did not want it to interfere with the Einarson book...as Pegasus was originally slated to reissue about the same time as the Arthur bio....but with no rights to the Logo, it was delayed for months.

whoa

its interesting because there a WHOLE SIDEBAR about Harvey's designing the logos for many an Elektra group

cool to see that on the accompanying Mojo cd theres stuff by David Blue, Ochs, and so forth. Elektra DID exist before Love, the Doors, Queen, something I certainly wasn't too aware of

Certainly the Doors made the label bankable
with their success

a success that Love very much could have had if they had played the game (toured, done promotion, built a following in NYC and elsewhither

Certainly they weren't a better band than Love, though they did have something (which Jac himself, pretty shrewd on the uptake, didn't pick up on until having seen them a few times. They were nowhere up to that point, having been dropped by Columbia

Elektra was more of a novelty, folk label, with spoken word and folk-indie. and blues stuff. Quite groundbreaking, but not very large market oriented at first. But Jac was ready to hit the big time by the time he found Love! Phil Ochs was a great find and also Fred Neil, but that was before Fred moved on to Capitol to record "Everybody's Talking". An amazing artist for both his Elektra AND Capitol releases!

I could be wrong about the LOGO ownership, but I can see Arthur demanding the rights to it since it was his name, and I can't see Electra refusing the LOGO and a chance to cash in on more $$ with new record sales with more Love publicity.

I just found it interesting cos this guy Harvey really had some clout, even got Jac to fire a band because of their not liking his design (!) (though Jac had Harvey do it)

I think Bryan mentioned him in the Psychedelic Psounds as having designed the LoVE logo for Elektra, I'm just intrigued by the fact that Arthur was canny enough to copyright the name AND the logo

apparently the Grass Roots WAS copyrighted (I guess the "poor mans" copyright or something (where its mailed off to yourself) but who would want to keep such a wretched name anyway! Love is probably the best name for a band, especially for one who was anything but!

Did NOT see the new Love book at Barnes & Noble of late, though that wretched 33 1/3 book on Forever Changes HAS been known to rear its head. On the plus side, a couple of (excellent) Syd Barrett biographies have just been published for the 1st time Stateside, and Mikes book HAS been known to turn up now and again here in the New Jersey malls!

Too bad he couldn't get the logo - that was DEFINITELY a selling point for the last edition, it being on the cover!
