I found it disappointing. I was so excited to find it because I had just re-discovered Love after a long period when they'd faded in my memory, but it wasn't much good if I recall. It's a couple of years now since I read it.
The whole 33 1/3 series is wildly uneven. Some of the books are well written -- I enjoyed the one on Highway 61, for example -- but some are just dreadful. You think the FC book is bad, take a look at the "Notorious Byrd Brothers" book. No, don't, really. Reads like it was written by someone who couldn't get an article placed in Creem magazine in 1968.

Interesting....And I kind of liked it. I don't think every book is perfect but Hoskyns at times came out with some insightful ideas that made you reflect on and appreciate the band and record. Well with me I'm always looking for new idea with FC because the record is so rich and well we know it's a great masterpiece in rock. I'm all for books like that and John Einarson's.

right, got the names mixed up...

Did you get the chance to read the book? I cojld see why some didn't like it though. The prose can get kind of 'flighty' at times.

I liked it. Of course it is written from a scholarly view and can be a bit lofty or presumptive. That is the purpose of the series anyway. Everything is mostly personal analysis mixed with historical "facts"...it's a bit like a scholar interpreting an arcane bit of poetry. Not everyone's cup of tea.

Arthur was arcane if anything, and some of H's "insights" are based on his own experience with depression and mental illnesses; but the 33 1/3 book takes us to places that a biography would never dare go. Some of the illustrations are a bit off the wall, but at least he is willing to go to some pretty dark places in the recesses of Arthur's mind...and he considers FC one of the top two rock albums ever, so he can't be "all good" (another Arthurism!).

One of the worst books I've ever read, down there with Finnegans Wake

was considering doing a video review for the tome on Amazon, but gonna give it a miss. Might actually get some people to read it

KD: I agree - I couldn't even finish it. Isn't this the one
that presumed Arthur spent all of his time reading classic
poetry and the like ?

You guys have made me reconsider. Now I'm gonna have to go and re-read the thing. It's right here on the shelf next to Einarson and Hoskyns...

Don't hold back, Joe. Tell us how you really feel!

I'm definitely with you on Finnegans Wake, though. Won't be wading into that swamp again.

I'll just read Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Dog instead!
