Any of you old surfers out there remember the Rendevous Ballroom in Balboa? Dick Dale and the Del Tones held court there for a couple of years 1961-62, and I was privileged hear the birth of Surf Music by the master, the King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale. I like to think Arthur may have stopped in there or the other venues Dick played in. There is a definite surf riff in Love's stuff. |

My first live concert ever, the summer before I started junior high; Dick Dale and the Deltones at the Rendezvous Ballroom, just about the coolest thing I'd ever seen. If someone had told me then that being at that show was going to somehow lead to a lifetime of rock n' roll and a career in rock radio, I'd have had tremendous difficulty buying it, but in retrospect, it still doesn't sound too bad. As Dick said, back in 1963, "Let's go trippin'." And within just a few short years, did we ever.... |

You know I read that Dale supposedly hated the way his 60's records sounded. He said Capitol just didn't know how to record him. And he also blew out many Fender amps with his guitar notes! |

Forgive me, but is he still playing....I remember he played Portland Maine several years back. The King of the Surf guitar forever! I remember that Capital albums came with an extra 45 stuck in the jacket promoting someone else....cool stuff for sure.

I guess it was the Rendezvous Ballroom. Did you go over to the Prison of Socrates to chill out afterward with Tim Morgon? Tim sang Kingston Trio and his own stuff. The Prison was across the walk at the head of Balboa Pier, same as the Rendezvous.
I have Surfer's Choice and it is in mono. It's not deep sound. I am going to convert it to a file, see what I can do with audacity. Dick has been fighting cancer and I wanted to see him at the Coachouse last year but couldn't fit it in. |

I saw Tim at the Prison of Socrates quite a few times, and also at both of the Ice House locations, in Glendale and Pasadena. Around that time he was also doing numerous high school and junior high assembly performances. All four of his albums are available on CD from his own web-site or from CD Baby. Nice biography piece on him, (mainly autobiographical) penned by surfer/musician/writer Corky Carroll at Tim's web-site. Dick Dale does still perform, at least as recently as last year, despite a serious cancer scare a couple of years back, and the shows remain as rockin' high energy as ever. I believe that he still resides in the Twentynine Palms area. |

Great, Rick. Thanks. Twenty Nine Palms area....nice. I remember driving through there on my way to LA from Phoenix and I'd swear I counted more than 29 palms....
