I guess the silence speaks for itself. No one wants to give up on Arthur but his demons are driving his life right now, so to speak. Arthur's varied personalities make each show different. This was a sad man, a man chasing the dragon, and totally lost. Plus, I have never seen him sit on the drum stage and not even attempt to do the song. Rusty, Mike and Johnny, held the vocals in place and worked their magic on guitar as did Dave. Daddy-o gave it his best. Seeing four awesome guitar players bringing it together, without the strings and horns was incredible. Without Arthur it was even more incredible. So Baby Lemonade thanks for holding it together. Johnny what a good friend to Arthur, you are. And we all need to hope Arthur can overcome what seems to be an increasing tango with the dark side. God forbid we lose another great musician before his time. My heart aches. Please don't shoot the messenger |

Sounds as though it might just be one tango with the dark side too far reading between the lines of Mike's latest diary. A sad time for all of us octfan and I appreciate your honesty and sympathise with you witnessing first hand,Arthur once again losing a battle with himself. |

I won't speak for anyone else who was at the CH, but I felt helpless and crushed watching Arthur. I grew up with his music and shows, and it's one of the things that's made me who I am. I was a big punk fan in the 70's and 80's having grown up with my anthem, 7 & 7, in the 60s - Arthur did it better than anyone. Earlier and better. All I could do at the CH was clap lamely, hoping that Arthur would survive, trying to give him and the band the only support that I could. I go to all of the shows I can, and will continue, and will spend more time going to anything Mike & the band put on. Real heros, those! And great talents. Mike always smiles & says hi - helluva nice guy.
Tis the season of miracles, and I have a deep, abiding faith that Arthur will be back, and things will work out for those who support him, and the universal debt will be paid off. Or maybe not - but it's all I can hope for for those whove given me so much over the years.
God bless. |

First of all thanks to Mike, for a remarkably honest, and tactfully written diary. Thanks also to ocfan and dxguy for their messages here...it seems that most of what needs to be said right now is contained in these. The Love shows that I saw earlier is year are some of the best concerts I have seen in 38 years of concert going. The most recent line-up of Love has given most fans the music that they've always wanted to hear. Whatever the future holds, Mike and the rest of Baby Lemonade deserve all the support that we can give them. I also hope to see Johnny Echols onstage (which I've never done, and also hope that the man who wrote "Signed DC" can once again give the phenomenal performances that he was giving only six months ago. Love and Christmas blessings to all, John E |

Well, I am very saddened by all this but not entirely surprised.
Saddened because it is obvious that so many people have bent over backwards to help Arthur and to help him stage an amazing resurrection. Saddened because he can't seemingly control himself. It seems evident he has a substance problem. HE needs to help himself before he digs himself an early grave.
Baby Lemonade was a very good to excellent band that was ascending. For them to stop that all and to give themselves to Arthur and Love was a big career gamble. Yes, they would make good money playing with the legend that is Arthur Lee but in some eyes they would only be seen as Arthur Lee's backup band, which clearly they are not.
I have the utmost respect for all parties involved and believe that although I, from a selfish point of view, would hate to see Love dissolve (and I believe that no other band could play with Arthur as well), that based on the reports I have read about the most recent show, if Baby Lemonade says it's time to go then it's time to go.
What is so sad is that Baby Lemonade members will surely feel heavy hearts if they leave but they may from time to time suffer humiliation by staying.
One reason why this implosion is not necessarily surprising is that Arthur fell apart (but apparently to a lesser degree) on the first gig (in California too) of the previous tour. It seems that when he is living at home he hurts himself. Once he starts the tour he cleans up some. On the dates in October he looked remarkably clean and performed majestically.
I swear that I have never seen an artist who is so talented and yet so troubled. I can only pray that Arthur shapes up but will be 100% behind Baby Lemonade if they go their own way. Sadly, that's what it may take for Arthur to shape up. The Spain fiasco was partially attributed to Arthur being shaken up by Rick James' death but clearly there is a larger pattern here.

I don't post too often on this board and hope to not offend with this comment. But Mike Randle has taken his share of abuse on this board. Certainly not by the people posting here but it is true that sometimes there seems to be a slew of nasty comments directed his way. And it even extends to emails sent directly to him. I'm sure he is heartbroken Mary. Baby Lemonade always, always, performed as a class act. And Arthur, when he is in a "mood" can be incredibly rude to his bandmates. They always had the class to just carry on and give a great show. Arthur is mercurial, fascinating, and unfortunately downright mean at times. Many Love fans see Arthur and only Arthur. And because he is Arthur they seem to think that he can do no wrong and I'm sorry but when you pay hard money to see a show the "star" should deliver. They don't realize or choose to ignore that Mike and his group, Rusty all of them, made the comeback of LOVE the success it was. One of the reasons I don't post too often is the insults directed at Mike Randle, frankly just pissed me off to no end. People will deny it but it's true. The good news is Johnny Echols looked fit, sounded great, and he and Rusty and Mike vocally were right on. To see Mike and Johnny together working as a team (as it should be) is a gift. And Rusty has carried Arthur on several ocassions vocally. Forever Changes will go down as one of the greatest albumns of all time. But as Mike said many, many people contributed to that albumn. Not just Arthur. My hope for him is that someone close to him can get him into a rehab and save his life before tragedy strikes. I feel that worried about him. As for Mike and the guys, my attendance at the shows was not just to see Arthur but to see Mike Randle who I believe is an absolutely incredible musician, guitar and otherwise. You folks in the UK sound like you might be blessed to see Johnny play with Baby Lemonade. What a treat. As for Arthur, I pray that he gets the help he needs. To put it in one short sentence. The MAN was so f#@*#@) up he spend most of his time sitting on the drumstand or mumbling about his pitbull. So I hope I don't hear any excuses such as "that's just Arthur". Because this is serious business and I don't want to hear about the death of Arthur Lee. So So Sad.

Wow, that is very messed up. I cannot understand why people would e-mail mean comments to Mike! It just doesn't make sense. The band is great and really has done a fantastic job of dealing/playing with Arthur. I don't really know Mike (just through his diaries and he was sweet enough to sign my daughter's album when we saw him at Town Hall) but he seems to me to be a really terrific, sweet guy. Matter of fact, I was so moved by his lovely recounting of when dyecraig played trumpet at the Falls Church (I think it was) gig, I felt compelled to just dash him off a quick e-mail telling him what a sweetie he is and what a monster guitarist I thought he was. He was sweet enough to e-mail me back and he doesn't know me from Adam!
The Baby Lemondade band is great and with Johnny Echols (I think I keep mispelling his name--am I?) playing with them--well, that was fabulous.
What did Arthur say on the bandstand? If any poster feels uncertain about posting it here, they can e-mail me.
Putting down your fellow band members on stage is just NOT cool! |
