One of the best things about this board is that while it was the music of Love which drew us together, we all come from differing musical perspectives, which in turn offers us the chance to hear about different musicians. There was a thread a while back (2005) about favourite bands/musicians, but I'd like to refine it further.
So, who are your favourite guitarists? Please note, I mean favourite, not necessarily those who would win the 'greatest' or 'most influential' polls. These are the guys (or gals) whose playing takes you to that "special place" whenever you hear them.
And can we play nice? No bashing guitarists or genres we might not like: this can be more a thread for introducing potential new acts to the group.
So, here are my favourite ten (possibly predictable!!):
1. Jerry Garcia (The Grateful Dead) 2=. Trey Anastasio (Phish) 2=. Tim Palmieri (The Breakfast) 4. Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane & Hot Tuna) 5. Steve Hillage/Daevid Allen (Gong - difficult to tell just who is playing what on much of their stuff)
6-10. (In no particular order, depending on mood) Jake Cinninger/Brendan Bayliss (Umphreys McGee), Steve Marriott (Small Faces & Humble Pie), Frank Zappa, Andy Latimer (Camel), Huw Williams (Huw & Tony Williams - now defunct Welsh folk duo)
Honourable mentions too to Crispian Mills (Kula Shaker), Dweezil Zappa, George Harrison, Steven Rothery (Marillion), Slick Aguilar (Jefferson Starship & The KBC Band), David Bromberg, Pye Hastings (Caravan), Janis Ian, Neil Young, Steve Howe (Yes)
I know I must have missed someone out, but... are there any out there who I just MUST listen to? |

Lemonadekid....my list would be very similar to yours, although I would definitely want Roger McGuinn in there as well. Yours (and Boombox's...and Bob's) mention of Jorma Kaukonen reminds me that I have just ordered two Hot Tuna albums.......along with Jorma's first solo work, Quah. The man is a guitar genius.....and someone who seems never to have lost any of his artistic integrity. |

I'm glad the emphasis is on FAVOURITE and not BEST, there are, imo, many brilliant guitarists who bore me to tears Not sure if I can think of just ten but I'll have a go..
Neal X (Marc Almond's guitarist for the last umpteen years) Bernard Butler (Suede) Johnny Marr (The Smiths) Link Wray Hank Marvin (The Shadows) Mick Jones (The Clash) Neil Fraser (Tindersticks) Mick Harvey (ex- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) Blixa Bargeld (ex- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) Roky Erickson (in 13th Floor Elevators) Marco Pironni(The Wolfmen, ex Adam and the Ants)
The above are in no partcicular order... |

Hey guys, I might have missed it but no-one mentioned Mike Bloomfield. That solo on 'Work Song' with Paul Butterfield blues band considering how many years ago it was cut is amazing. Other stuff with Al Kooper was good. As anybody who has seen me on here before knows my connections with the Yardbirds so Page, Beck and Clapton would have to be up there. Clapton is the guitarist , Page is a real showman but Beck is the one to make a guitar sound more unlike a guitar with the sustain and the knowledge of the instrument to make it do unnatural things. So that is four, Pat Metheny is good and I have a very old video of an open air concert with him backing Joni Mitchell with Jaco (rip) on bass and the Breckers (rip 1).5 , John Mclaughlin,6 Les Paul (rip again), where would the music be today without him, ok somebody else would have thought of multitracking but it was his idea originally, makes 7. Brian May ok it is a bit of a wall of sound, that is 8, Gilmore of Floyd and probably Steve Howe makes 10. Sit here again tomorrow and I would pick another ten probably apart from Beck. Harvey the Roadie |

Gawd, what a hugely difficult question. I guess that for me the ultimate accolade would be that the guitarist has played on a piece of music that has been so expressive that it has moved me to tears. With that as the benchmark, my ten would be:
PETER GREEN John Martyn Richard Thompson Randy California Robert Fripp Neil Young Chris Spedding Robbie Robertson Steve Miller Ry Cooder
... but there are others who I just love listening to, and HAVE to mention, feeling it would be almost traitorous not to: John McLauchlin, David Lindley, Jerry Garcia, Roy Harper, Ollie Halsall, Dave Davies, John Cipoollina, Pete Townshend, Mike Oldfield, Lowell George, Roger McGuinn, John McGeoch, Michael Karoli, Joni Mitchell, Earl Slick, Frank Zappa, Albert King, Steve Stills, John Renbourn ..... |

Thanks for bringing up Bloomfield...great stuff and with Stills on Super Session...none better.
And it would be stretching it, but Jaco took the bass to lead guitar levels as no one before or since...sooo good!
An did anyone get any more "colours' out of lead guitar than Barry Melton--the fish were were trip--who needed drugs!!
And if we are going to mention Bert, how can John Renbourn be left out?

Thanks for remembering John McGeoch, he was, indeed, a wonderful guitarist. When I saw the reformed Magazine live recently it just wasn't the same without him. |

PS I must add Marc Bolan and Mick Ronson, both played on some of the earliest records I bought and loved, before I was ten years old! |

Carynne...speaking of Johnny Marr..... and, indeed The Smiths, did you catch Morrisey on Desert Island Discs last week? It was a fascinating listen...though as usual, he did seem a little self absorbed.
Yes, I did catch it, must be the only time there's been an edition where I have all the music... Moz has great taste I don't think Moz is self absorbed, just honest, he says what he thinks and doesn't care if it's the 'correct' thing to say or not. I may not always agree with him (but usually do) but I've always admired his openess. |
