I was rather lofty with my comparing Bryan to Tim. Bryan writes brilliant melody and fine lyrics, but for the same reason that Love would not include more of his songs on Da Capo, Bryan's songs lack a certain depth in that darker depth that Arthur and Tim delve.
And after listening to "ifyoubelievein"..which I love dearly, for all it's beauty and innocence; yet, on a side by side listen, I'm afraid Bryan can't touch Buckley's heights of vocal & instrumental genius, nor the brilliant catalog of melodic and lyric genius.
Like Lennon and McCartney, Lee & MacLean were so much better with each other than alone...not sure if either duos were willing to admit that, though. Of course Lennon & McCartney at least gave credit to each for contributions to each others sings, in title (even when they didn't) and in interviews. Lee was so indebted to Bryan for his presence and great talent. Arthur did admit that Bryan was a "great, great songwriter"...but did he admit all that he owed to Bryan's influence on his own compositions? I don't think so.
I digress. Point is, I shouldn't have compared Tim & Bryan. I love them both!
