12:50pm UPDATE on Sky Sunlight Saxon
Category: Music
Sky has improved a little today ... I say that but I also want to stress that he is seriously ill and is heavily sedated. He is not responsive when being talked to so I'm not sure if he hears or not. He is still in danger. I am playing his music for him ... Right now I have Back To The Garden on. He always likes hearing his own music when he isn't feeling well and it always helps so we are hoping he is hearing somewhere deep in the recesses of his mind ... The nurses and doctors are enjoying it too! I have the slideshow from his myspace site playing continuously on my computer ... helping me project him up and laughing and performing and talking and having a good time being alive! TODAY: His main doctor tells me that this process is going to be a crawl ... very slow ... They are trying now to just get rid of the infection and to keep his organs running and get him into a truly stable doing everything on his own situation. We are NOT there yet. This is not going to be a situation where he wakes up any day now and is okay. He has a long long way to go so although he is improving it is at a very slow pace. At this point I am not allowing visitors into the room. I do not believe that Sky would want people to see him with the breathing machine and all of this stuff. Once he is able to be more awake and if he communicates with me that that is what he wants then I will allow it. People are welcome to come and be here in the hospital and in the ICU waiting room and I'll be happy to come and sit with you and talk and give updates and all of that. I am here 24/7 except once a day after the doctors make their rounds and update me when I run home and feed our dog, take a shower, do some basic stuff, and I head right back. I also am very vigilent and if I think something doesn't look right or isn't working right I go to the nurse. The nurses are amazing and have no problem with me doing this. I'm not overbearing about it. I just want you all to know that I am your ears and eyes because I know everyone wants to be here so I promise I am watching and making sure he is taken care of. Nurses have sooo much to keep up with and they do an amazing job but it doesn't hurt to have an extra set of eyes. I have an amazing support system here with the boys from the and ... World Spirits / Shapes Have Fangs --- Dustin has been an amazing support just showing up with fruit and nuts and tea and just sitting with me and talking --- the rest of the boys: Joshua, Evan, Skylar, James (videographer for the band) ... also Donny and Jessica! Kevin Phillips! Brian Curley! Sue Davis!!! Christian Bland of the Black Angels .... We are so appreciative of all of you for being willing to do whatever needs to be done ... to help me out so that I can be here for Sky. He is going to get through this. I just know it. With your continued support and positive vibes and thoughts and prayers, he will pull through. Some details: *** Blood Pressure GOOD *** Heart Rate GOOD *** Lungs CLEAR *** Kidneys - not good and not producing Temporary dialysis will begin tomorrow or next day per his Kidney Doctor *** He is receiving blood now and already the nurses tell me they can see an improvement *** He is still too sick for the gastro doc to put the scope in to see what is happening down in his gut .... but that will happen eventually ... Patience seems to be the word now .... Patience .... LOVE LOVE LOVE to each of you and now I'm going to go send this update out to the email distribution and post to myspace.com/theseeds ... then I'm going to try to answer individual messages ... so bear with me, okay? LOVE LOVE LOVE

I'm very sorry to report that Sky has died in hospital in Austin, Texas, earlier today. I was lucky enough to see Sky and the Seeds perform at the London Forum in 2004, on the same bill as Love.

RIP Sky, you were one of a kind.

R.I.P. Sky Sunlight Saxon, I am listening to 'Future' by The Seeds at the moment, great album? I was lucky to see Sky play live in 2003 in London and Brighton and again 2004 in London supporting LOVE, he was a great performer and a nice guy too.. I was at the first reunion gig of 'New York Dolls' at Royal Festival Hall in June 2004 and bumped in to Sky at the gig who was friends with Arthur 'Killer' Kane fron the band, had a chat and also got my pic taken with him , my daughter Skye was named after him too..

R.I.P. Sky

R.I.P Sky. Devastating news, I feel so numb right now, just like when Arthur left us.

SKY SAXON

Sky Saxon, who died on June 25 aged 71, was a rock singer with one of the strangest careers in popular music. His brief success in the 1960s was followed by decades of seclusion in a religious cult before his musical reputation was resurrected by bands such as The Strokes and The White Stripes; he then styled himself "The King of Garage Rock".

Published: 7:54PM BST 29 Jun 2009

He was born Richard Elvern Marsh in Salt Lake City, Utah, on August 20 1937. Arriving in Los Angeles in the early 1960s he sang doo-wop as Little Richie Marsh, but, inspired by The Beatles, he formed a rock band and changed his name to Sky Saxon.

After brief stints in several local outfits he formed The Seeds in 1965 as lead singer and songwriter. The band developed a raw, abrasive sound and began performing at clubs on Sunset Strip, quickly picking up a record deal.

The Seeds broke into the American Top 40 with their debut single Pushin' Too Hard, which reached number 36. Though the follow-up – Can't Seem To Make You Mine – stalled at 42, they quickly became the most popular new rock band in Los Angeles, earning $6,000 a night.

With their second album, A Web Of Sound, released in late 1966, they embraced the pervasive psychedelic culture, repeating the trick the following year with Future, an attempt to create a hippie soundtrack comparable to The Beatles' Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Despite a live album released in 1968, The Seeds had by then been overtaken by more talented rivals: The Doors and Love. As a result Saxon reshaped the band as Sky Saxon's Blues Band and released the 1969 album A Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues with sleeve notes by the veteran bluesman Muddy Waters (who optimistically called them "America's own Rolling Stones").

The album's commercial failure led to GNP releasing the band from their contract. Saxon issued a handful of unsuccessful singles on different labels while the IRS confiscated his house in Malibu due to non-payment of income tax.

But he had already found another obsession to replace his fading rock career: The Source Family, a Los Angeles religious cult whose founder, Jim Baker, ran The Source, a fashionable vegetarian restaurant. Baker believed himself to be Ya Ho Wha (Jehovah). Living in a Los Angeles mansion, the cult recorded their own primitive psychedelic music with Saxon. They sold these albums at The Source for $1 each.

Baker named Saxon "Sunlight" and from then on he would be known as Sky Sunlight Saxon. The Ya Ho Wha cult moved to Hawaii in 1974 and Saxon remained there, very occasionally issuing mail order-only recordings.

In 1984 however, the British label, Psycho, managed to coax Saxon out of retirement to record the Starry Ride album. He then issued two albums under the name Firewall, often recording with Los Angeles musicians. Retreating to Hawaii in 1991 he remained unheard of bar a 13 CD collection of Ya Ho Wha recordings in a wooden box issued by a Japanese label.

Finally, in 2002, Saxon emerged again to put together a version of The Seeds and tour Europe and the United States, where his 1960s recordings were in vogue again. In 2006 he recorded the album Transparency in London for Jungle Records. He continued to record and perform in America and Europe, those who encountered him likening him to a man who appeared to have stepped off the Sunset Strip circa 1969.

The Seeds' original 1966 recordings remain popular, often featuring on film
and television soundtracks and advertisements, and Saxon's songs have been performed by The Ramones, Noel Gallagher and many others.

Sky Saxon is survived by his wife, Sabrina Saxon, and their son, Joshua Aquarian.

Havn't been here for a while, just kind of stopped 'foruming' (if there is such a word) but I was really sad to hear of Sky's death. Those who know me well will know that I had a bit of a close encounter with Sky a few years ago (!!!) but I had to admire his cheek and just thought' Good on you'. I was lucky enough to see him perform live and it was certainly an experience. He was an original, a one off, and the world is a sadder place without him. Such a pity the revue tour will be lacking another great artist.
After hearing of Sky's death I made sure I got some tickets to see Roky Erickson at the Forum in London. I really hope Roky has years left in him but it does bring home how important it is to make the most of the greats whilst they are still with us.
