Always gotta hear Joni Mitchell's "River"...course we hear that one all the time in the malls...but I still love it.
Trying to think of something different...."Amahl & The Night Visitors" by Menotti is my favorite (the original performance from the 1951 TV special...don't make 'em like that anymore....you can still get it easily)

You are right, you can't beat the Phil Spector Xmas Album. Another favourite is Nat King Cole's Xmas Album, Nat's voice is perfect for Xmas. |

On Enya
did you ever see the episode of Southpark where Stan's grandad convinces him to help commit euphanasia by playing him an Enya track, with the logic that the only thing that can convey just how bad being old is, is listening to Enya! Feckin funny but i must admit I like Enya and Clannad myself
Last holiday I went on we had Big Sur by the Thrills playing as we drove round a very chilled out Autumnal Ibiza

watchin'....yeah i missed that one on the "Castle"!....
And I was waitin' for an Enya post like that!!! Yeah I know her music probably gets put in that "muzak' class" by some. But in any case we go what we like, eh? I like her melodies. Kind of reminds me of old Eire and the Celts with a new age feel. That's her gig. And speaking of other music that might not be top of mind my wife and I hope to be making a pilgtimage to Eire to hear some down to earth ceili music by some real traditional bands. Besides the new stuff we like the old and traditional as well. Ceili music reminds me somehow of "American Bandstand" (Dick Clark's famous show here in the states back when highlighting rock'n'roll artists..broadcast from allan's area in Philadelphia!..I'm sure you watched it allan) where you rate the music and you have to say well you can "dance to it"!... |

Of course I remember 'American Bandstand'. Watched it faithfully pre-teen years. I even used to know some of the names of the regulars. It eventually became more syndicated on Saturday nights still before the move to CA. "Who likes Beechnut spearmint gum?" was a sung commercial with the teenagers hands flipping independently to the beat. It was kooky but yet cool at the same time. I remember seeing Dwayne Eddy doing '40 miles of bad road' with real elephants on the set.

i'm a sucker for 1950s-60s holiday records, shmaltzy,corny,groovy,sugar-coated, and too-happy!
isn't that what it's all about!? gimme those sleighbells, chimes, littl bells, big old chimes, tambourines, tinkley sounds, choral singers, Charlie Brown children, Rudolph, Frosty, The Chrystals, Darlene Love, Ronettes,Marshmallow World, AND glockenshpiels and colored balls falling, and mushroom clouds in my coffee!

Me too, bob & rocker. Guess we're from the generation that saw Charlie brown Christmas & Grinch on their TV "world" premier!!  All you said!! Been listening to my Vince Guaraldi vinyl of C. Brown Xmas all yesterday PM. Just keeps me going during work. Love it.
When I'm really close to Christmas I put on Beethoven's 9th...the corale finale, Nutcracker Suite,
and Christmas eve is usually "Amahl & The Night Vistor". "Scrooge" (Alistair Simm) at Midnight.
Grinch Christmas morn while relaxing.
