right on bob....and hey was that dame named er...Velma???????????... and Rich did receive an academy award nomination for that role you noted...I think he liked to play guys "on the edge". One thing that really grabs me when I watch those film noirs is how the picture looks. Thsoe directors really captured how a side of the post-war US looked to some. |

...what the world needs now...
Widmark really captured the crazy killer part perfectly, bob. That kind of violent criminal & many other similar roles trace back to Cagney for starting that kind of role with his famous grapefruit-in-the-face scene. Jimmy had said later that he didn't think they would actually keep that in the film. Cagney did the crazed tough guy better than anyone. Remember "I finally made it, Ma! Top of the world!!"
Cagney was nick-named by peers (pears was my misspell, originally!) as the "Professional Angster" for his willingness to stand up to any director or film big wig. He once refused to do a line (actually many times) and director John Adolfi said, "I'm gonna tell Zanuck." Cagney said, "I don't give a sh*t what you tell him, I'm not going to say that line." They took the line out.
They also used live ammo in movies, having not perfected blanks. After one close call, he said no more. Good thing. On the set of "Angels with Dirty Faces" they were using live ammo in the machine guns and again he refused to act in the scene with live ammo and that the gunfire be superimposed. It was a good thing as machine gun fire ricocheted passing through right where his head would have been.

They Live
Anyone else see this cheesy sci-fi?? About a couple of dudes with sunglasses that allow them to see that a lot of people are really aliens and all media is laced with subliminal messages: "Buy. Sleep. Consume...."
IT'S FROM 1988 and pretty strange. Maybe "bad" is the word, but it fascinates you, like "Plan 9..." does. Strange.

i like it! that movie has become a cult favorite in the conspiracy community. especially Bush's New World Order and mind control. Author David Icke talks about the Reptilian race of aliens who control us for thousands of years. they shape -shift, and their facade is the news media cheerleaders ( also either brainwashed, or reptilians, too.)

Ya , quite the cult movie!! It caught me and kept me all the way. From what I've heard during a crazy debate at Freed's site, I'll keep the Reptile people where they belong, science FICTION! But fun stuff if you don't take it TOO seriously. Bush and his boys were just BAD...I'm not gonna blame reptile aliens!! Leave the reptile debate for "Coast to Coast" talk radio, after midnight!! From what I've read by and heard of Icke, he's more a savvy huckster, than a whack-job.

To Kill A Mockingbird.... ....will be on Monday eve, Feb 9th on TCM (7PM EST, 8PM Central) if you want something wonderful in your head. Actually, I think it's on on of the Encore channels, but TCM is running ALL academy nominated or winning movies in February again (Awards month, I guess they do it every year).

Saw "Gates of Heaven"..anybody familiar with it? Made by Errol Morris who did the Thin Blue Line. Anyway, you might look at pets and people a different way after this one! |

Was there ever a doubt this would become a classic?? Watched our fave, LOVE STORY, again last night. Still gives me a tear when Arthur says "I'm still waiting.....". I've lost any respect for the Rock and Roll Hall, considering the deserving bands and artists NOT inducted, and who likely never will be....they gotta make room for all the Idol stars!
We should start a subject for all of the great ones that are NOT in the Hall.....Iggy and The Stooges for starters!! Turned down seven times!
Madonna's IN ?!! ...ya, she influenced Britney, so ya.....HA!!
but NOT Todd Rundgren, no Moodies (early catalog more than qualifies, so what if they became a bit self indulgent), no Guess Who, no Rush, no Shangri-Las, no Heart or Humble Pie, no Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin, Steve Miller, Jethro Tull, no Steppenwolf, no Mott.....name some more of your faves not in. I don't necessarily "love" all of the above, but surely they deserve it.
No Neil Diamond, BUT Madonna AND Beastie Boys ARE IN??!!! The POP Hall of Shame, maybe!! ____________________________________________________________ Round up the usual suspects.... |

the hall of shame honors mostly celebrities and $, not artists/rock-visionaries. we should have a new awards called "The ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME"! honoring rock and roll artists cause they're great and rock -out, and create art, and are loved by and looked up to by the rock community as icons: such as LOVE.

The "Torben Skott Music Hall of Fame" happens everyday here. ....with Love occupying the main hall.....
The R & R Hall of Fame has become a joke anyway, so I won't waste any more brain cells over it!! ...except for entertainment, but....... still hoping for the DAY!!
