Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life. Possibly the most life affirming film ever. I've just read that it won the 'best director' and 'best film' Oscars for 1946. When I saw it one Christmas in a small cinema a few years back, the whole place erupted in applause at the end....not usually the British way...we are normally far too reserved for that kind of thing!

Couldn't agree more, John, about Capra's holiday masterpiece. Great
story too, about the theatre erupting in applause at the conclusion
of the film. I just caught the stage performance of "It's a Stevie
Wonderful Life" by the Troubadour Theatre Company in Burbank. Check
their web-site at www.troubie.com. They're a pretty amazing musical
and comedy troupe; smart, entertaining stuff, mixing the classics, be it
Shakespeare or Capra, with contemporary music. They've done "As
U2 Like It," "Comedy of Aerosmith," "Fleetwood MacBeth," "The Little
Drummer Bowie," "Hamlet, the Artist Formerly Known as Prince of
Denmark," and "A Charlie James Brown Christmas." Very entertaining
and highly recommended, for anyone in the southern California area.
Again, www.troubie.com.

john9.."far too reserved"..are you kidding?????......I should put you guys in prison for causing me to lose my breath laughing so hard with your comedies that we import over here!......there is one scene in Fawlty Towers..I think it's the "psychiatrists" one where he puts the ladder up on the hotel, climbs up and happens to peep in the window.....that look that look!....priceless..one thing I wished Cleese could have done was a Christmas episode or something..if he'd done then each year I'd know I'd have to laugh my a** off....

Watched "Meet John Doe" with Coop. Excellent.

Has a good Christmasy ending ... a fine movie. Especially appropriate today with the John Does beating out the Fifth Column (MJD reference) Bush legacy. It'll all be over soon Dubbya....all things must pass....even you George W. What a Merry Christmas for us all---a new hope!

Mr, Deeds...was on too ....TCM Gary Cooper day....nice. I can watch Coop in almost anything.
(meaning Coop is good in any movie he made, not I'll watch him no matter what I'm wearing!!

I've recently taken delivery of a Blue Ray player - and in fact of a entire new HD TV system. Although I don't have any blue ray discs yet, it is amazing how the system upgrades your existing DVDs. In the last week, I have played Kurosawa's magnificent swansong, Dreams - and the classic British 50s crime thriller The Long Arm (with that master of the stiff upper lip, Jack Hawkins). This said, I shall still go to the cinema to see selected new releases.

Don't know if they'll stand the test of time...but just watched the Bourne trilogy....again. One of the best of the recent or past action film(s) period. Intellent with great character development.
Fun adventure, start to finish.

Last night I watched Dinner At Eight. Such a funny, tragic amazing movie. The first movie to have an ALL all-star cast. How can you beat:

Marie Dressler
John Barrymore
Wallace Berry
Jean Harlow
Lionel Barymore
Billie Burke

Anyone else see this on TCM?

30's & 40's films encompass many of my favorites, rocker. Maltese Falcon is tops, oh and Topper!!, Holiday, Philadelphia Story,
My Man Godfrey, His Girl Friday, Steamboat Annie, The Bank Dick, Way Out West....well you see where I'm going. The cream of the Golden Age...so good!!

Well I'll tell you each Sat we bring out an oldie from my collection of 40's, 50's and film noir flix. I don't know but when I see those films it's amazing to see how life was lived at the time. heh heh I think it's like the ancient world when you check out the phones, the tv's, the hi-fi etc etc..I guess we've come a long way with tech..and I think we can also talk about the cultural mores...before we had some people forced to sit in the back of the bus and today we have an African-American as a future president of the US...turn,turn turn...

i like those old 1930-40s movies. seems there were lots of "fainting" couches, you know, where the blonde DAME slams down that big 30 pound telephone receiver, and faints onto that convenient couch.
all the men wore big hats and suits. when they ran out of bullits, they THREW the gun!
one of my favorite scenes is in " Kiss Of Death", where Richard Widmark is the most evil, GIGGLING crazy as he pushes an old lady in a wheel-chair down the stairs.

...what the world needs now...
