Given that I have never actually see footage of a young 1960's Arthur Lee in all of his rock and roll glory (i.e. Whisky A-Go-Go), I have wondered what was the full scale evolutionary process that he went through. Judging by pictures, and what I have read and heard, the 1966-1967 Arthur, was almost an athletic pied piper type, singing his heart out and moving around on stage with as much grace and swagger as anyone else in the 1960's.

By 1968 moving on into 1970, I seem to understand that he was more of a proggy frontman, standing still, holding his guitar and playing the part of a technician. Makes since I suppose to evolve, especially when now, you are picking up an instrument on stage.

What of the Vindicator/Black Beauty era, in which there was more of an electric blues/hard rock sort of an edge? Does anyone have any ideas as to his shift in persona and energy?

Is any of what I posted acurate?

yes, Arthur did stroll the stage, up to the front, and make contact!
i know, 'cause i was there in 1966-67 at the Hullubaloo on the Strip to see LOVE, with LEE blow his harp on Signed DC. HE WALKED RIGHT UP TO THE edge, and i'll never forget it. i'd already been a big fan, and when i saw him at that venue, i was blown away!
it was the first time i saw LOVE. Arthur Lee has always been special to me. Forever Changes changed my world a few months later, and i'm glad i was there at the early era to get some cool stuff!

...what the world needs now...

hmmm..You know in my memory seeing him here in NY many years ago at a small venue in the Village he struck me as kind of being laid back a bit in performing. The band was tight and energetic but really I'd think they were far from home and adjusting to playing away from LA. At that time (late 60's) I don't think think they were known very well here. Now that's just my recollection from the time. All I'd say that as Arthur got on with his career he realized that if he wanted his musical vision to get out there it had to be done with bringing in other people. Since he was kind of adamant about what he wanted it's not surprising that he was tough with musicians working with him. I know he liked peforming but I just think creating stuff was his mantra.
