There's a relatively new book out called Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll's Legendary Neighborhood by Michael Walker.
Here's an exerpt:
As was inevitable in the canyon, Marlowe West (recent Canyon inhabitant) brushed up against the musicians banking fame and occasionally fortune. One afternoon, thrashed on LSD, he set out barefoot in the Kirkwood Bowl, picking wildflowers. From a hilltop, Arthur Lee of Love watched his relentless progress with amusement and a little awe. West reached the summit and encountered Lee. "He was on LSD, too. He says, 'I've been watching you.' When I ran into him, it was funny because I had to acknowledge how spaced-out I was. I had my arms filled with this gigantic bouquet." West retreated down the hillside and had started up Laurel Canyon Boulevard when Mama Cass pulled over and picked him up.
