Posted - 29/11/2011 : 20:55:37 Josh Ritter keeps coming back to me....in the 100 best LIVING songwriters of all time list.
Josh Ritter (born October 21, 1976) is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and author who performs and records with The Royal City Band. Ritter is known for his distinctive Americana style and narrative lyrics. In 2006 he was named one of the "100 Greatest Living Songwriters" by Paste magazine.
Highly recommended as he harkens back to our love of 60's songwriter storytellers...Americana & folk, rock at it's best.

Posted - 25/08/2011 : 17:24:58 Leiber penned Hound Dog, hit record by Elvis in the fifties. I bought the 45 record and was floored by this song and the words. I wasn't sure if it was some hillbilly music or what, but I liked it. Never heard anything like it. The flip side was Don't Be Cruel. Actually, I'm not sure which was the A side, I think they both were no 1 hits or close to it. |

Posted - 25/08/2011 : 13:57:56 Just saw Leiber/Stoller in the thirties after complaining they weren't there
Well one half of that duo has left us recently..Jerry Lieber RIP. He wrote some great hits for both white AND black musicians. Just was a sharp guy when it came to songwriting. |

Posted - 18/08/2011 : 14:09:38 yeah and I'll add one of my favs..Mr. Lightfoot...And I think ultimately the kudos should go to Dylan and the duo of Lennon/McCartney. Not only for their fine songs but for the fact of their sheer influence in music-making. From acorns the oaks grow! |

Posted - 17/08/2011 : 19:56:45 OOpps!Just saw Leiber/Stoller in the thirties after complaining they weren't there. My apologies to Paste.By the way what is Paste magazine?I mean the format.Never heard of it.And LK,as far as Mike Nesmith,he suffers from the same fate George Harrison suffered from. His talents have been overshadowed by the Monkee thing just as Harrison's gifts were upstaged by Lennon/McCartney. |

Posted - 17/08/2011 : 17:40:17 SOme obvious deletions (at least for me)....
Roger McGuinn Chris Hillman Iain Matthews David Crosby STEVE STILLS!..."For What It's Worth" gets him on if for nothing else!!
Emmylou Harris
JOHN CALE
JOAN BAEZ
Rod Stewart (the classic Rod more than qualifies)
Kate Bush!?!
MICHAEL NESMITH!!!....JACK BRUCE!...STEVE WINWOOD!!
...and yes, the Bard, Dylan, obviously belongs at the top
There are likely more female artists that belong but most lists are prejudiced towards the male writers.

Posted - 17/08/2011 : 15:13:20 Reasonable but there are always controversies with these things.Especially in their top tens.I still think Prince is a bit overrated and I know it may due to personal sentiment but I would like to have seen David Gates of Bread SOMEWHERE here.In terms of pure lyrical talent, yes I would go with Bob Dylan, but since the element of melody is really what makes the greats so timeless,I'd have to go with McCartney for a personal number one.Where are Leiber/Stoller?Did one of them pass on eliminating their eligibility. One thing's for sure,I'm duly envious of the wonderful gifts of the many on this list with whose work I'm familiar.I tried my hand at the craft a few times and brother, its hard to even write a BAD original! |

Posted - 17/08/2011 : 03:10:49 Just the condition of living ones only, really mutes the list. That is the beauty of songs, they live on and on.
So let it all shine on and power to the people, if you get my drift. |
