Also, Christmas Canon, Trans Syb Orchestra. Pretty cool |

I ordered Baez' "Noel" original vinyl.....thanks, j9!! I'm sure I'll enjoy it!!

'Twas the night before Christmas when all throguh the house Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse The stockings were hung by the chimney with care In hopes that St Nicholas would soon be there".....
Everybody knews the rest and its history. Agrubaly the piece that got all America going with Santa, reindeer, presents under the tree, sugar plums (hey who makes'em???) etc etc.......

Posted - 07/12/2008 : 20:59:44 Yes Lemonadekid, ghost stories are alive (!?) and well over here. Apart from Dickens we have the immensely popular M.R. James who lived from 1862-1936. He specialised in the short story format and many of his eerie little tales are set in around Cambridge University where he was vice-chancellor. Especially recommended are Number 13, Martin's Close and Barchester Stalls. Over the years his stories have been dramatised for film, radio and television. But to me the most chilling adaptations were read directly to the camera late at night at Christmas by Manchester actor Robert Powell.
Another popular area is the railway ghost story. Dickens' The Signal Man dates from 1866. But the real life Tay Bridge rail disaster of 1879 gave rise to a great many others ....including another personal favourite....Journey Into Fear by Arnold Ridley. |

Love the 'typo'...makes it sound rather ghostly
Right, caryne. The UK is famous for it's Christmas Ghost stories...Dicken's introduced the old tradition to us over here. Do you all in Jolly Old England still tell ghost stories round the fire at Christmastime? I read all of Dicken's Novels....I'm trying to remember, was it in The Pickwick Papers on one of their adventures, that had them sitting round a fire telling a Christmas ghost story?? I think Nicholas Nickleby & The Old Curiosity Shop are two of my Favorites, though Bleak House is close. I really like em all. I will read A Christmas Carol again soon. A tradition.
You guys have any traditional Christmas reads?

Nutcracker, yep. magical. By the way, Baez has a new album, her 50th album!! And she's touring Europe and later the US. And thanks for the Xmas Baez tip!! I love her One Day At A Time LP, too,

Posted - 05/12/2008 : 20:44:52 I've always enjoyed Joan Baez's Noel album from, I think, 1966 or 67. And my favourite track on that is the always beautiful and timeless Coventry Carol. |

Posted - 05/12/2008 : 16:36:55 Me too, bob & rocker. Guess we're from the generation that saw Charlie brown Christmas & Grinch on their TV "world" premier!! All you said!! Been listening to my Vince Guaraldi vinyl of C. Brown Xmas all yesterday PM. Just keeps me going during work. Love it.
When I'm really close to Christmas I put on Beethoven's 9th...the corale finale, Nutcracker Suite, and Christmas eve is usually "Amahl & The Night Vistor". "Scrooge" (Alistair Simm) at Midnight. Grinch Christmas morn while relaxing.
