Wonderful Revisit with 60's Icon Arthur Lee and Love
****** Ever since Arthur Lee' release out into the California sun in 2001
after a 6-year stint in the shadows of prison bars, the legend hasn't
wasted time, touring incessantly, giving memorable shows in both
Pumpehuset and at the Roskilde Festival, before giving an intoxicating
show in Amager Bio Thursday evening.
Although he's soon 60, this unique talent has had much to catch up on
after wasting his abilities in the slammer after a combination of
convictions spanning many years, for drugs, breaking into his girlfriend's
house, and firing a gun in the air in a neighbor quarrel. Yes, King Arthur
has always gone his own way, and fortunately his past hasn't affected his
music.
Magical
As the front figure for Love, Arthur Lee made musical history with a
series of albums from the mid to the late 60's, and echoes of the group's
psychedelic garage rock and demonic hippie pop can still be heard today in
the music of current Danish bands like Baby Woodrose, On Trail and Tim
Christensen.
As so often before, the veteran Lee seemed last night initially to be
in a daze, but the bit shaky start soon proved to enrich the evening's
séance, and during the 100 minute-long show the legend proved to be in
fine voice, performing all the ever-green classics from his phenomenal
repertoire.
The unforgettable
ballad, "Signed D.C. and the rocking "My Little Red Book" were among many
songs that produced major shivers, and we were treated to the major part
of Lee's masterpiece "Forever Changes" album, which easily bore the fine
backing band, Baby Lemonade's replacement of the history-making album's
orchestral poetry with youthful dynamism.
And you can call that Love and devotion
