I have this news from a friend....we need to confirm but it looks true!! At Einarson's facebook page... Thanks, Joe!
An excerpt from the forthcoming book Words & Music by John Einarson (2023) from the chapter on researching and writing my book Forever Changes: Arthur Lee & The Book of Love.
Arthur’s reluctance to tour was a major impediment to Love’s ability to gain an audience beyond LA’s Sunset Strip, where the group held court. Johnny feels that the inter-racial mix of black and white members, while ground-breaking for its time, was also problematic. “Being an integrated group made it difficult to play some places,” Johnny observed. “A black group could play the chitlin’ circuit or any places like that in the South. And a white group could go anywhere in the South. But not an integrated group. And when you consider that the South was a major part of the live music market, we couldn’t go there. So we could play the West Coast or the East Coast but the Mid-West and the South were never big markets for us.”
He also recalled that being in a popular band and playing to thousands of adoring fans meant nothing to LA police. As band friend Peter Piper recalled, “I remember seeing Love on the Sunset Strip then later that night seeing Johnny and Bryan and their Volkswagen van pulled over by the cops and them with their hands up being frisked. A black guy and a white guy together was enough to get the cops to pull them over. That was an automatic red flag to the police back then. ‘What are you guys doing together?’ They just figured there was something going on that shouldn’t have been. Once he got off the Strip, Johnny Echols was just another black guy.’”
