Artist Biography by Andy Kellman-allmusic guide

Often compared to Jeff Buckley, Scott Matthews is an English singer/songwriter primarily influenced by folk and, to a lesser extent, blues -- though he has also claimed the likes of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin as influences. Signed to Island Records, he released his first album, Passing Stranger, in 2006. The record was warmly supported by several BBC disc jockeys, and the low-key single "Elusive" won an Ivor Novello Award. A good deal of touring followed, including shows alongside the Foo Fighters, Bert Jansch, and Rufus Wainwright, as well as a supporting spot on the U.K. leg of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss' Raising Sand tour. Returning home from the road, Scott Matthews and his backing band partnered with producer Gavin Monaghan, who helped ready the sophomore album Elsewhere for release in 2009.

AllMusic Review by Philip D. Huff

Singer/songwriter Scott Matthews released a debut album full of bluesy rock songs, ranging from radio-friendly "Passing Stranger" to the Eastern tinged, quiet folk of "Earth to Calm," in April 2006 on his own co-owned label. Matthews recorded the album himself independently, had it mastered by Ray Staff in London, released it, and shortly thereafter Island picked up on it. There is a surreal, dreamlike quality to the album, partly due to Matthews' voice (which is often double-tracked), and partly due to the music that slides in and out of the mix, with little snippets of jams, songs, and strange instruments thrown in between songs (think The Hour of Bewilderbeast, but less pop). The opening lines of "Elusive" bear a resemblance to Jeff Buckley's work on Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. Matthews, however, has a lot more dirt in his voice than Buckley -- he's an earthier, calmer singer -- and sometimes he even manages to evoke a Moby Grape-like sound, or the music Eddie Vedder did for the Dead Man Walking soundtrack. The acoustic rhythm tracks that Matthews lays down -- think Eric Clapton Unplugged -- provide a fine backdrop to his singing. All in all, this is a well-crafted album full of good songs, and an impressive debut...

Scott Matthews, is a singer/songwriter from Wolverhampton, England.

His first album Passing Stranger was released on 13 March 2006 on San Remo Records before being re-released on Island Records later in the year. Janice Long was the first of the BBC DJs to play his music. Soon, tracks from Passing Stranger were also being played by Mark Radcliffe and Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2. In April, Scott played sessions on BBC Radio 2 & BBC 6 Music.

Matthews' first single "Elusive" was released in September. The single received much airplay from BBC Radio DJs Jo Whiley, Dermot O'Leary, and Zane Lowe. Between 7Ð10 August, Lowe played "Elusive" once each night as his chosen Single of the Week. Matthews also visited the station to perform "Elusive" and other songs from the album in May and August 2006. In May 2007, he won the Ivor Novello Award for "Best Song Musically and Lyrically" for "Elusive".

Matthews notes amongst his influences a number of artists, most notably The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Marc Bolan, and Joe Satriani.

Matthews has toured the UK extensively in support of his album and appeared in support of the Foo Fighters for their acoustic Skin and Bones concerts around the country in June 2006.

Matthews' second album Elsewhere was produced by Matthews and Gavin Monaghan and released on Island records.

His third album, What the Night Delivers, was produced by Passing Stranger producer Jon Cotton.

ÒHome Part 1Ó is the 4th studio release from Matthews. The album is the first to be recorded entirely by Matthews in his home studio. What the Night Delivers features guest performances by double bassist Danny Thompson (whom Matthews met whilst performing in Joe BoydÕs stage production of Way to Blue-The Songs of Nick Drake) and regular contributing musicians, Sam Martin, Danny Keane and ScottÕs brother, Darren Matthews who plays piano on two tracks; "The Clearing" and "The Night is Young".
