TYPHOON

Despite the band’s name and their song’s macabre title, Typhoon is not some pummeling metal band. Instead, they’re a group of good-natured indie-rock lads and ladies from Salem, Ore., who have a new video for “Dreams of Cannibalism” — which you can watch exclusively here.
The song is the single off their upcoming new album White Lighter, due out this fall. (Hopefully, the album won’t bring the band too much bad luck!).

Typhoon is an American indie rock band from Oregon. The band has eleven members. They have released four albums, two EPs, a split 7-inch record with Olympia-based band Lake, and have contributed to a number of compilations. The band originated in Salem, Oregon in 2005 but is now based in Portland, Oregon. They are signed to the indie record label Tender Loving Empire.

On August 4, 2011, Typhoon made their television debut on Late Show with David Letterman, performing "The Honest Truth".

Typhoon's music is marked by complicated arrangements and careful orchestration. Live performances routinely involve 12 or more band members playing at once. According to Lauren Rosenthal at mySpoonful which describes new music: "The group masterfully combines indie rock instrumentals and vocals with violins, percussion, hand claps, xylophone, horns and a choir of other instruments, making for inspiring and catchy songs."

Their early recordings reveal a greater degree of experimentation with various styles, including a number of "sea shanties", country western and Eastern European-inspired songs. Their more recent output, including their album Hunger & Thirst and its companion EP, A New Kind of House, show a more focused and consistent sound, and a greater focus on creating a cohesive thematic through-line. Many of the songs are preoccupied with mortality and directly reference lead singer and primary songwriter Kyle Morton's own struggle with Lyme Disease as a child.

In 2010 Typhoon was voted number two on Willamette Week's annual list of the top ten best new bands in Portland. Their music has appeared on the SyFy series Being Human and the NBC series Chuck. They have opened for The Thermals, Quasi, Yann Tiersen, Explosions in the Sky, The Decemberists, and The Shins and toured with Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. Their song "The Honest Truth" was ranked #3 in Paste magazine's list of the 50 best songs of 2011.

The appropriately named Typhoon is an 11 member sprawling band with an epic sound. The group from Portland, Ore. crafts rock anthems like emotional tidal waves, propelled by the stories of frontman Kyle Morton. His deeply personal tales are often full of grief and loss. But just as often they celebrate and praise life's simple wonders. Morton himself is a very grateful (and lucky) man who writes songs as if he were living on borrowed time. That's because a random bug bite when he was a child left him with a monstrous case of Lyme disease that led to multiple organ failures. Morton's own father donated a kidney to save his son's life.

At 27, with a backing band of a dozen musicians, Morton and the rest of Typhoon are making some of the most poignant pop tunes around. We've been following this group for a few years now, but Typhoon has never done anything quite like what you can hear on its latest album, White Lighter. The songs are by far the best arranged and most compelling of the group's nearly 10-year run.

Somehow everyone in Typhoon not only managed to fit behind the Tiny Desk, but also managed to shine in this performance. If you're looking for music that touches your heart, that helps you appreciate the everyday, sit back and get ready for Typhoon to carry you away. --BOB BOILEN
