Michael Nesmith On World Cafe
A fascinating interview with our hero Papa Nez, on his development as a songwriter and the "cinematic sound of the movies of his mind" - from the Monkees to The First National Band and onward. How the music video was born and MTV, when it was good--and on his discovery of the power of words which led to his musical style.

He's best known as the tall, hat-wearing member of The Monkees, but Michael Nesmith has worn many other hats in the last few decades. Nesmith recently finished up his first solo tour in 21 years, playing songs from both his original country-rock group (The First National Band) and his solo albums.

Nesmith's songwriting career dates back to before The Monkees' 1966 television debut. One year earlier, he'd written the song "Different Drum," finally scoring a hit when Linda Ronstadt popularized it in 1967. In this installment of World Cafe, Nesmith discusses his pre-Monkees songwriting. You'll hear the original cover of "Different Drum," as well as a few of the songwriter's other famous hits.

Heartwarming to hear Nez these days. I didn't know of his sight problems with cataracts, but glad that he is OK now. He seems to have really finally come to peace with the Monkees legacy, and he's not too busy anymore and enjoys touring and playing with Micky and Peter and is not slagging the Monkees music. I guess time has cooled some of the passions he had regarding this.

I relistened to Nes-only Monkee cuts this weekend, and even in the limitations that he operated under, his songs, whether written, produced or sung by Nes have a special something to them, even the way out ones.

Here is one of his best:

And one of his weirdest:
