Encore post...

One of my all time favorites and it is considered an audiophile treat though it predates true "audiophile" releases.

For me it stands as one of the greatest from the CSNY crew.

If I Could Only Remember My Name
is the debut solo album by David Crosby, released in February 1971 on Atlantic Records. One of four high-profile albums released by each member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their chart-topping Déjà Vu album, it peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200. It has been in print continuously since its initial release. The album gained new recognition in 2010 when it was listed second on the Vatican's "Top 10 Pop Albums of All Time" as published in the official newspaper of the Holy See, L'Osservatore Romano.

A large grouping of prominent musicians from the era appear on the record, including Nash, Young, Joni Mitchell, members of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Santana. This ad-hoc ensemble was given the moniker of "The Great Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra" by longtime Crosby associate Paul Kantner; many of the same musicians appeared on the latter's Blows Against The Empire, recorded concurrently with Crosby's album. The album also features the only recorded appearance of David Crosby's reclusive brother, Ethan Crosby.

Although the album garnered its share of detractors, including Crosby's then-manager David Geffen and influential Village Voice rock critic Robert Christgau and only a lukewarm review from Lester Bangs in Rolling Stone, it was a modest commercial success, peaking at #12 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. Two singles were taken from the album, "Music Is Love", which was released in April 1971 and peaked at #95 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Orleans" which was released in July 1971. The album has gained in critical appreciation since its release.

The album was released on compact disc on October 25, 1990, having been digitally remastered from the original master tapes, using the equipment and techniques of the day, by original engineer Stephen Barncard. A double-disc reissue appeared on November 6, 2006, with an audio disc remastered in HDCD, including a bonus track "Kids and Dogs," and a second DVD Audio disc of the original album remixed for 5.1 digital Surround Sound.

Reviews of the most recent reissue place the album in the same influential company as the more baroque works of Nick Drake and Fairport Convention.

Half a sin Crosby never comes up when people talk about pop music's better singers.I know he's not really a wailer like Plant or Daltrey and not so enigmatic in this area as say Mick Jagger, but then his music doesn't really call for any of that and he definitely has a gift for delivering most poignant balladeer style singing. This man has PERFECT pitch and his tone, true to his type of material,is beautifully soothing. As well as all of this,he's certainly a master of the acoustic guitar as are,of course,Messrs. Stills and Nash.

Mark - thanks for that fascinating YouTube clip....it lends a whole new dimension to the song.

I've got the de-lux CD/DVD edition of the Crosby album. It boasts an excellent little booklet together with a bonus track entitled Kids and Dogs - yet another song of wordless harmonies. A quick trawl around the You Tube will yield some of the (as yet unreleased) other songs that David was working on at the same time....many of them with Jerry Garcia. Here's one I especially like:

The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra is a nickname given to artists who recorded together in the early 1970s. They were predominantly members of Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Their first album together was Blows Against the Empire, when they were known as Jefferson Starship. The name changed to Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra for the next album, David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name. During the sessions for Crosby's album at Wally Heider Studios, the musicians of each band were invited to the sessions and rehearsed hours of material, and everything was recorded. Material played during these recorded sessions in 1971 was used for Crosby's album (the "PERRO Chorus" is credited on the song, "What Are Their Names") and several other solo albums after Crosby's. The name Jefferson Starship was later used for Paul Kantner and Grace Slick's new band formed in 1974. Paul Kantner recorded a solo album in 1983 as a tribute to this time, Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra.

Of course it is If Only I Could Remember My Name that has gone down in history for the magnificent, mind expanding and haunting soundscape that it is. But it should not be forgotten that it was followed only a few months later by the first Crosby and Nash album....that one contains five more superb songs from David: Whole Cloth, Where Will I Be, Page 43, The Wall Song - and this heartbreakingly beautiful piece - from just after his time with The Byrds:
