Responsible for tons of tremendous music with the Doors and beyond,

Came as a shock to Doors fans. Truly a heavyweight of the greatest era of music. With no Ray then no Jim Morrison or the Doors. RIP Ray you were a part of the biggest influence on my life. Rick, do you have any remembrances of Ray on the Strip or LA during the time they were part of the LA scene?

| I was very fortunate to have seen the Doors perform a number of times while I was still in high school in Southern California. My first attempt to see them, during their opening act "residency" at the Whisky (no record out yet, but major "word-of-mouth" buzz about them) ended in failure, because the Whisky was still doing eighteen and over at the time. Finally saw them for the first time at one of the Hullabaloo "Afterhours" shows. The first album had either just come out, or was about to be released, and as far as Ray's first impression on me, it was immediately clear that he was by far the best keyboard player I'd ever seen, especially once I finally managed to realize that the reason I was hearing a "bass" but didn't see a bass player on stage, was what Ray was doing with his left hand; keyboard bass, while doing all kinds of cool organ stuff, the foundation of the songs, with his right hand. They were an amazing live band, right out of the gate, unlike anything else at the time. Although I saw them play live a bunch of times, including an afternoon set at my old high school, Crescenta Valley High, in La Crescenta, just north of Glendale, in September of 1967, I never did see Ray actually just hanging out on the Strip, unlike Jim, who I spotted checking out other bands in clubs, or walking on Sunset a number of times. When Ray added his signature to those of Robbie and John on the cover of my copy of "Waiting For The Sun" at the L.A. Times Book Festival a few years ago, he gave a smile, and very wryly said, "I don't think you'll be getting any more band signatures on this one too soon..." |

| Well rw you were certainly lucky to have seen the band perform live. Unfortunately I only know them through their records. In any case, all of us who knew of the band got to hear their music and it was such 'timeless' music. To me, the music that Ray made with his mates has no 'age' as such. I guess unique people like Ray just make unique music. This week my table will be spinning the Doors in memory..... |

Thanks for sharing RW. Vince Treanor their road manager has said that the best way to say thank you or pay tribute to Ray (or Arthur/Bryan/Kenny for that matter) is to keep their music alive by spreading word of their genius and making sure the future still has bands like the Doors and LoVE thriving. Sage advice I think.

| Just want to say that last night on the Smithsonian Channel they did a piece on the LA Woman album. Timely of course and I found the telecast very enlightening about the band and their music. And I'll echo underture's comments about 'keeping their music' alive. They made magic in another musical realm for sure. And as Ray Manzarek noted that if you say a dead man's name he becomes 'alive'....... so......Ray Manzarek. he opened 'doors' for us, eh? |

| Only saw the Doors once - at the legendary Roundhouse gig - but what a band. Didn't think it was good to tour in later years with replacements though |
