How did the band ever last through the summer? With personality conflicts and high amounts of alcohol and drug use.

They didn't. They lasted through July '68 before Arthur decided to recruit new band mates. No fanfare or official split, just Arthur keeping the name "LoVE" and playing with new personnel.
